February 16, 2010
(Bayville, N.Y.)-Bayville resident and Portledge School alumna Gemma Baehr, Class of 2006, performed her Senior Recital in Greenfield Hall at the Manhattan School of Music on Sunday, February 7, 2010. Gemma, whose goal is a career in performance, will graduate from the Manhattan School of Music this year and will continue her education as she pursues a Masters degree. She studies violin with the renowned violinist and educator, Grigory Kalinovsky. Her mother, Patricia Baehr, teaches at Portledge School and is the Music Department Head. Gemma sang in the Portledge chorus, participated in the school’s band on the trombone, and played the violin in its chamber ensemble. She represented Portledge in All-County orchestras and was also selected for All-State and All–Eastern ensembles, an exceptional honor.
The featured works of Gemma’s Senior Recital were: Mozart - Sonata in B-flat Major KV. 378; Prokofieff - Five Melodies, op. 35; Brahms - Sonata in G Major, op. 78; and Ravel - Tzigane: Rapsodie de Concert.
While at Portledge, Gemma was a member of the Student Advisory Committee for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, working to bring classical music to high school students. She was quoted on the Student Producer section of the Chamber Music Society’s website as saying, “I have loved music for my entire life. I began piano lessons when I was four years old and started the violin when I was seven and a half. Music has such potential to influence and excite our mood. I believe that more people my age would seek to listen to classical music if they were exposed to it. I love performing because it gives me the chance to say, with my violin, Here: Listen to what this composer has to say. Isn’t it amazing!”
Gemma developed close relationships with a number of her Portledge teachers, and several faculty members attended the recital.
