sharongrosser.jpg(Nassau, N.Y.)-Get ready for the FUN event of the year! It’s Literacy Nassau’s 2010 (un)SCRABBLE Challenge, featuring a fabulous new location with superb food, beverages, and dessert, along with raffles galore, and of course, (un)SCRABBLE! All this – and great networking – makes for an entirely unique and fun-filled evening. What sets (un)SCRABBLE apart from other events is this: while it’s Literacy Nassau’s most significant annual fund-raiser, it’s also a terrific fun-raiser for those who attend.

In the words of Barbara Behrens, Literacy Nassau Vice President and Chairperson of (un)SCRABBLE, “What better way to celebrate the spirit of Literacy Nassau’s mission than with words, (un)SCRABBLE words, that is! Come alone, come with a team, come to have fun and support Literacy Nassau at the same time. Mark your calendar for 6 PM on Monday, March 15, 2010 at the Chateau Briand on Old Country Road in Westbury.”

Literacy Nassau is delighted to announce that Long Island “Charity Superstar” Sharon G. Grosser [PHOTO LEFT] has been selected as the honoree during this special evening. Freeport resident (and Literacy Nassau neighbor) Grosser is the Director of External Affairs, Madison National Bank and a Board Member of the Madison National Foundation, and a longtime supporter of community initiatives.

What Is (Un)Scrabble?
People can be a bit baffled when hearing about an event called (un)SCRABBLE. In a nutshell, teams compete in short, timed rounds, and the team that forms the highest-scoring words from their Scrabble tiles in each round is the winner. It’s called (un)SCRABBLE because the format is slightly different from the regular game - all the tiles are exposed and the teams scramble to fill their boards. It’s exciting, energetic, smart and a bit wild.

There are a variety of new ways for individuals, teams and businesses to become involved in (un)SCRABBLE, including an array of sponsorship opportunities, “Go Team Go” package, commemorative program ads, and raffle donations. About Literacy Nassau
Literacy Nassau is the only no-cost, learner-centered literacy organization in Nassau County. Since 1968, the organization has provided over 30,000 adults in Nassau County with free literacy instruction one-to-one or in very small groups. Serving both native and non-native English speaking adults with the lowest levels of literacy, Literacy Nassau strives to provide people with the option of becoming members of a self-confident and informed populace – understanding issues, representing themselves, taking responsibility for self-improvement and family health, and better able to participate in civic affairs.

With over 300 students currently waiting to enter the program, Literacy Nassau’s greatest need is for volunteer tutors. One particular story drives home this need: recently, a 25 year-old waiting student called to find out how long it will take to find him a tutor. Though he graduated from a local high school, he reads at just over the second grade level, doesn’t have a driver’s license, and recently lost his construction job because of an injury. He said with everything going on out there he needs to start moving on his reading. For additional information on becoming a Literacy Nassau Volunteer, call 516.867.3580.
