February 8, 2010
(Smithtown,N.Y.)-February 8, 2010 ?The Department of Motor Vehicles located at 250 Veteran’s Memorial Highway in Hauppauge recently featured the artwork of two of Developmental Disabilities Institute’s most creative artists, Thomas Griffin and Michael Miller. Both are former members of THAW (Talented and Handicapped Artists Workshop). Both have had their work shown at local banks and libraries as well as “Art in the Park” at Landing Avenue Park and DDI’s art gallery “Main Street Masterpieces” in Smithtown. The DMV exhibit attracted favorable attention and even an inquiry about purchasing some of the work.
Thomas Griffin of Bay Shore is an alumnus of THAW, where he displayed a previously unsuspected talent. He was the recipient of several awards for both painting and sculpture. His paintings reflect Tommy’s love of New York City. “South Street Seaport” was painted from a postcard picked up during a visit to the area. “Wild Geese” was painted from memory as was “Central Park” where he had been on a visit with his mother as a child. He has great attention to detail. More of Tommy’s works are featured at DDI’s art gallery.
Michael Miller lives in Smithtown and is a prolific artist who was a member of THAW. He continued to take private lessons after THAW ended and has expanded his repertoire of works. He has had several one man art shows on Long Island. “Skip” is the portrait of an art therapist that Michael had known while at THAW. His love of yellow is evident in two works both created at different times in his career as an artist. “Yellow Bird” originated while at THAW and “Leopard” was painted years later. He and another of his art therapists are featured in the final painting on display at the DMV exhibit.
