Statement By Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos

(New york,N.Y.)-I support Governor Paterson’s efforts to ensure that New York maximizes every opportunity to qualify for federal funding through the Race to the Top program. These funds are critically important for our schools and we cannot miss out on this opportunity.
When I spoke with Governor Paterson and other legislative leaders earlier this week, I assured the Governor that Senate Republicans will be supportive of his efforts to guarantee that New York is able to compete for the funds.
In fact, Senator Martin Golden has introduced a bill that, like the Governor’s plan, lifts the cap on charter schools and includes other provisions to make sure New York is in the running.
