Chanukah Across The Generations
December 21, 2009
(Cedarhurst, N.Y.)—The JCC of the Greater Five Towns Holocaust Survivors Support Group recently celebrated Chanukah along with students from The Brandeis School in Lawrence. Spanning many generations, the celebrants dined on latkes and sang traditional Chanukah songs. The students got to mingle with the survivors, where they all shared their favorite Chanukah memories.
Guests were also treated to a concert featuring soprano Raquela Sheeran, accompanied by Jeffrey Grossman on the piano. Both are from the Piatigorsky Foundation, a nonprofit organization which brings live classical music to hundreds of thousands of people who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend such performances.
The dwindling generation of Holocaust Survivors has remarkable stories of their lives in Europe, both before and during the war. Survivors feel strongly that the memories, although difficult, must be shared to be preserved. The JCC of the Greater Five Towns highly acclaimed program offers an opportunity for survivors to come together and talk about their own unique chapter of Jewish history. Social events include trips, parties, shows and holiday dinners. The JCC also offers entitlement assistance, case management, home visits, crisis intervention and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder counseling.
The Jewish Community Center of the Greater Five Towns is a beneficiary agency of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Federation of New York, a member agency of the United Way of Long Island, the Jewish Community Centers Association and an affiliate of the Five Towns Community Chest. It serves the communities of Cedarhurst, East Rockaway, Far Rockaway, Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence, Lynbrook, Malverne, Valley Stream, West Hempstead and Woodmere.
