nyserviceproviders.jpg(Smithtown, N.Y.)-Developmental Disabilities Institute (www.ddiny.org) announced today that two of its direct support professionals were among a small group honored this year by the New York State Association for Day Service Providers.  Matt Sykes, a Commack resident, was awarded the 2009 Service Provider of the Year Award for the Long Island region. Surovi Mukerjee, from Patchogue, received the 2009 Leadership Award for the Long Island region.  Both awards were presented at the 2009 Symposium in Saratoga Springs in November.

Each year, the Leadership Award is presented to six individuals from across New York state who provide exceptional supervision of Direct Support Professionals.  The Service Provider of the Year Award recognizes six outstanding men and women who provide direct support or direct services for consumers.  Agencies, such as DDI, are able to nominate one employee for each award every year.

Matt Sykes is Assistant Manager at DDI’s Meadow Glen Day Hab.  “Mr. Sykes is a wonderful, hands-on provider who is always willing to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of the individuals we serve,” said Sue Davis, Associate Director of Adult Services at DDI.  “It is no surprise that he was chosen for this award.  His compassion, patience and respect for the men and women he works with provides each with an invaluable sense of control and dignity.  His hard work and enthusiasm benefit everyone at DDI.”

Surovi Mukerjee is Manager of DDI’s Main Street and Northport Day Habs.   “Ms. Mukerjee deserves this award because she is a true leader who has routinely and consistently won the hearts of all with whom she interacts,” said Jill Rothar, Assistant Director of Adult Day Services at DDI.  “She leads by example, always demonstrating a unique compassion for each person while maintaining a strict adherence to the agency’s mission.  She has encouraged staff to implement some very innovative programs, and she empowers those she supervises to take the initiative and make decisions.”

DDI is a not-for-profit agency headquartered in Smithtown, NY, with more than 30 locations throughout Suffolk and Nassau Counties.  Serving nearly 1,000 children and adults with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), DDI is the largest provider of services for individuals with autism on Long Island.  It provides educational, vocational, and residential programs, as well as medical and dental services for over 1,500 children and adults with autism or other developmental disabilities.  DDI also operates family-centered preschool programs for both children with disabilities as well as typically developing students.  DDI was founded in 1961 by a group of parents to address the special educational and therapeutic needs of their children with autism or other developmental disabilities.  DDI is a member agency of the United Way.  For more information about DDI, visit www.ddiny.org.
