Statement From Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos
November 23, 2009
(New York,N.Y.)-Senate Republicans have repeatedly asked Governor Paterson to send us his deficit reduction bill to act on, yet he has refused to do so. Governor, send us your bill. Enough with the hysterics.
We asked for his bill last Thursday so we could resolve our differences and act on it immediately. Instead, the Governor allowed the Senate and Assembly Democrats to cancel the session and go home.
Senate Republicans have proposed a plan that would reduce spending and close the deficit. It includes much of the Governor’s proposal and more than half of the savings in our plan would be recurring.
Senate Democrats have agreed with our deficit reduction plan. The only roadblock to getting a bill done are Assembly Democrats and Speaker Sheldon Silver who have yet to issue any proposal to close the deficit and continue to advocate for mid-year school aid cuts that would result in local property tax increases that are unacceptable to taxpayers who have had enough of tax hikes.
Unfortunately, Governor Paterson is more worried about his poll numbers than budget numbers.
Taxpayers are tired of the Governor’s podium pounding act and are looking for him to provide some leadership. He should submit a deficit reduction bill that could be acted on so we can close the budget gap.
