(Bethpage,N.Y.)– New Island Hospital (www.newislandhospital.org) in Bethpage, NY was recognized at the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council’s (NSHC) 2009 Excellence in Patient Safety Awards on Thursday October 29, 2009.  New Island Hospital was honored for its abstract, “Zero VAP Utilizing IPRO Bundle in a Small Community Hospital,” which details a successful initiative to reduce the number of patients acquiring Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) and to decrease the number of days patients in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) spend on a ventilator.

“This is the first time that New Island has submitted to this prestigious competition, and NSHC’s recognition of this particular abstract is a testament to the highly dedicated multidisciplinary team who participated in this initiative,” said Dr. Aaron Glatt, New Island Hospital President and CEO.  “Thanks to a well thought out and executed plan, we have essentially eliminated ventilator associated pneumonia in our critical care unit, and we are very proud to share this program with our fellow Long Island caregivers.”

NSHC is the membership association that represents Long Island’s 24 not-for-profit and public hospitals.   According to NSHC, the nominations for the Excellence in Patient Safety Awards were scored for their impact on patient care and safety, innovation, adherence to quality improvement principles and methodologies, use of relevant process and outcome measures and systems through the improvement process, sustainability, evidence of cost-consciousness, and demonstration of effective use of human and material resources.

As yet another example of its strong commitment to patient safety, last year New Island Hospital initiated a new position, Vice President of Patient Safety, whose responsibility is to make sure that patients are being provided the highest quality of care in a safe and caring environment.
