New Island Hospital Launches Diabetes Education Center

(Bethpage, N.Y.)– Aimed at improving the lives of those living with diabetes, New Island Hospital (www.newislandhospital.org) in Bethpage, NY announced today the opening of its Diabetes Education Center. The outpatient center offers comprehensive educational programs for anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. New Island Hospital welcomes Lucille Hughes RN, BSN, CDE, a Carle Place resident, as director of the new program.
The Diabetes Education Center at New Island Hospital provides services such as meal planning, blood glucose monitoring, insulin pump therapy, and continuous glucose monitoring sensor studies. Both individual and group classes are offered, and each is led by a Certified Diabetes Educator.
The newly appointed director of the Diabetes Education Center, Lucille Hughes, has over 20 years experience in the area of diabetes education and program development. She comes to New Island Hospital from Winthrop University Hospital Diabetes Education Center. Mrs. Hughes is a Certified Insulin Pump Trainer and an expert in the area of insulin pump therapy and continuous blood glucose monitoring. She is also an adjunct instructor at Molloy College where she has developed two diabetes education programs for healthcare providers. She has been published in Nursing Spectrum and has presented for both professional and lay audiences at both the community and national level. Mrs. Hughes is currently President of the Metropolitan NY Association of Diabetes Educators, a Chapter of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
The Diabetes Education Center at New Island Hospital utilizes the latest technology including professional, continuous glucose monitors; insulin pumps and pens; and other devices that enhance individual self-management strategies.
