(Smithtown, N.Y.) On Thursday evening, May 14, 2009, at a convention meeting at the Elks Club in Smithtown, New York, Republican Patrick R. Vecchio was nominated for re-election to the position of Town Supervisor.  He is the longest-serving supervisor in Long Island’s history.  The nomination was accepted by Mr. Vecchio to exuberant applause.  Already a known example of fiscal conservatism, Mr. Vecchio nevertheless warned, with fire in his eye, that in these economic times, it is especially critical to keep the reigns on spending.

Having had the leadership of Pat Vecchio for over three decades, the Town of Smithtown, according to Long Islanders, is one of the best townships in New York State in which to reside. Mr. Vecchio has given Smithtown the highest bond rating and the lowest debt on Long Island, and because of past governance, Smithtown is poised to weather the present economic storm better than most, say officials.  Formerly a New York City police detective assigned to protect dignitaries, including Pres. John F. Kennedy, Pat Vecchio has now enjoyed over 32 years of service to his neighbors by running an efficient local government.

Mr. Vecchio’s main challenger is expected to be Democrat Patricia Biancaniello, a councilperson in the Town of Smithtown.  There is no doubt in this author’s mind that the budget and taxes will be issue numero uno for the election.  We will see whether Ms. Biancaniello will hold the Democratic party line or whether she will promise to control spending and taxes, like the incumbent Vecchio.  Either way, both individuals are longtime residents of the Town of Smithtown, love their community, and we should assume that they seek to do what they think is best for the Town’s citizens and economy.

Also nominated for candidacy at the May 14th convention were the following:

  • Thomas McCarthy (Rep) -  for Councilman
  • Kevin Malloy (Rep)  - for Councilman
  • Vincent Puleo (Conserv)  -  for Town Clerk
  • Daniel Donnelly (Conserv) - Superintendent of Highways
  • John M. Kennedy (Rep) - Suffolk County Legislator
  • Lynne Nowick (Rep)  - Suffolk County Legislator

Time for a change, but not all at once.

I just called the Smithtown Highway Dept for the second time complaining about t he condition of some of our roads in the Commack area. Havermeyer off Townline Rd the center island is a disgrace. The grass is 4 feet tall, garbage thrown from disrespectful people, but none of t his is cleaned up by the highway dept. If you are going to grace us with a center island leading into our area, then it is the town’s responsibility to keep it clean. The pot holes are dumped with tar for a temporary fix and we are lucky if they last a few months. Saktikos pkwy is littered with garbage from one end to the other, Do we see “do not litter signs” nooo, do we see “Save a Parkway such as on LIE” noo, of course not, don’t want to hurt anyones’ feelings. We are embarrassed to have friends visit, Long island has become a dumping ground. We are not all rich and famous.
We are residents for 46 years our taxes go up every year, and typically the cost goes up every year for less service. I would like a response to my email.
    thank you
