Well-known as a passionate advocate in the fight against hunger, New York State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg will pay tribute to Island Harvest and its volunteers on Sunday, May 17, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at The Sands at Atlantic Beach. As a special treat, world renowned recording artist Michael Amante is scheduled to appear and perform at the event.

Michael Amante, whose great tenor voice earned him an Emmy nomination for a PBS special, will be on hand to perform several musical numbers as his way of paying tribute to the good work done each day by Island Harvest’s core of over 1,500 volunteers.

“In light of the current economic conditions, with more people accessing the food programs supplied by Island Harvest, it’s good to have such a staunch ally like Assemblyman Weisenberg on our side,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “The Assemblyman’s dedicated support and passion for the issue is a powerful weapon in helping Island Harvest fight hunger on Long Island.”

The Sands at Atlantic Beach is located at 1395 Beech Boulevard, Atlantic Beach. Tickets for the event are $75 per person. Checks can be made payable to Committee to Elect Weisenberg, with the net proceeds going directly to Island Harvest in its fight against hunger on Long Island. For more information call 516-889-3071. Attendees to this gala event are also encouraged to bring canned goods and non-perishable food items to help those in need.

About Island Harvest
Fighting hunger and touching lives, Island Harvest serves as the bridge between those who have surplus food and those who need it, supplying hundreds of community-based nonprofit organizations on Long Island with critical food support to help stem the advancing tide of hunger in our communities.  Island Harvest has delivered 57 million pounds of food, supplementing more than 44 million meals, since its inception in 1992.  In support of its mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, the organization is actively involved in educational and hunger awareness programs to inform the public about the insidious but often unrecognized problem of hunger here, in one of the wealthiest regions of the country, and how individuals, businesses, schools and commercial food establishments can make a difference.  Island Harvest is a member of Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest).  For more information about Island Harvest, visit
