Young Reporters Participate in Senator Flanagan’s 4th Annual Student Press Conference
(Long Island, N.Y.) To provide local student reporters with some valuable experience, Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently hosted over 40 student reporters at his 2009 Student Press Conference. The event at Senator Flanagan’s Smithtown office provided aspiring writers with an opportunity to experience a realistic press conference and ask their state representatives the questions on their minds.
Senator Flanagan organizes this event every year and invites all the school newspapers throughout his district to join him. This year, student reporters ranging from third grade to high school seniors from eleven schools covered the press conference.
The event enables these aspiring journalists to ask the questions that are important to their fellow students but may be overlooked by the mainstream media.
Senator Flanagan opened the event by providing those in attendance with an overview of state government. This included a discussion of his fight to protect the educational system of Long Island, his efforts to protect the taxpayers he represents and other important subjects.
Those opening remarks were followed by a question and answer session that covered a wide range of topics. The students were able to ask Senator Flanagan about his view on the future of the Nissequogue River State Park, his efforts to protect the needs of Long Island’s young workers and his feelings about the future of the state’s economy.
At many times during the discussion, Senator Flanagan followed a student reporter’s question with a question of his own to get their input on the issues important to them. This allowed for a more open discussion about the future of New York State and gave Senator Flanagan to hear what is on the minds of the younger people he represents.
The reporters who participated in the Senator Flanagan’s 2009 Student Press Conference represented the following schools:
- Branch Brook Elementary School
- Commack High School
- Comsewogue High School
- Half Hollow Hills High School West
- Kings Park High School
- Longwood Senior High School
- Newfield High School
- Northport High School
- Smithtown High School East
- Smithtown High School West
- William T. Rogers Middle School
“This is an event that I look forward to every year and it is great that so many students took part this year. Their knowledge of the issues affecting our state was impressive and I enjoyed the give and take immensely,” stated Senator Flanagan. “Hopefully, this experience gave them a real taste of what it is like to be a professional journalist and helps them as they move forward.”
