Panera Bread’s “Operation Dough-Nation” Nets $35,000 For Island Harvest
February 24, 2009
(Mineola, N.Y.) Not only do area Panera Bread bakery-cafes donate surplus food to Island Harvest, but its patrons share in the spirit of giving as well.
As part of its “Operation Dough-nation” program, Panera Bread recently presented Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, with a check for $35,000. Contributed by Panera customers, these funds will help to provide food assistance to over 259,000 Long Islanders, including 93,000 children, who face the risk of going hungry each day.
“We are grateful to Panera Bread’s continued support of Island Harvest by donating excess product to help us address the growing problem of hunger in our communities,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and chief executive officer, Island Harvest. “It is especially gratifying that in these lean times Panera’s customers generously do their part to help those less fortunate in our community.”
Panera’s day-end “dough-nation” program allows for unsold bakery products to be packaged at the end of each day and donated to local food banks and charities, like Island Harvest.
“We are proud to share Panera warmth with families here on Long Island who are less fortunate,” said Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Panera. “Bread is an important part of our culture – it brings people together – and, with the help of Island Harvest, Panera is happy to give back to those communities in need. And, we want to thank our guests, who have warmly welcomed us into their neighborhoods, for further supporting our vision by helping to share the warmth as well through their personal generosity.”
