(Long Island, N.Y.) Long Island Film Festival (LIFF) will launch its 25th edition “Best Of” event that will include four nights of impressive independent films and an exclusive “Music in Film” panel discussion moderated by renowned Long Island radio personality and Long Island Music Hall of Fame board member Denis McNamara.
“We are thrilled that the Long Island Music Hall of Fame will be lending their talents and expertise to celebrate our festival’s 25th Anniversary tour by taking part in this unique panel discussion,” said LIFF Executive Director Francis J. Leik.
The four nights of independent films and panel discussions are being shown at two very hip venues—the cozy Creative Arts Studio in Sea Cliff and Perspective Studios in the City of Glen Cove. Topping the film schedule is “Parting Words,” an independent film by director Stan Schofield, recently featured on PBS Reel 13 movie night. Mr. Schofield can be seen on a producers’ panel scheduled for February 25 at Perspective Studios.
The LIFF will be winding up its novel east coast tour when it arrives in Sea Cliff on Monday, February 23 for a lineup of 10 short subject film screenings. The afternoon program here starts at 1:30pm, followed by the same program repeated starting at 6:30 p.m. and Then on Feb. 25, 26 & 27 the festival will move to the City of Glen Cove for a mix of feature films, short subjects and special events. Film screenings and additional programs at Perspective Studios in Glen Cove will start at 4 p.m. and will also include panel discussions with industry insiders, Q&A with the filmmakers and actors, and an awards presentation on Feb. 27, followed by a networking after party with live music entertainment.
“Our new, exciting venues offer our festival the trendiness and excitement of Tribeca or Sundance, but all within a short drive for film and event buffs,” said Mr. Leik. “The diverse programs we’ve scheduled will give all a chance to see some truly wonderful independent films, and our panel discussions will provide aspiring filmmakers and film lovers with an opportunity to hear from some of the best professionals in the business.”
Many of the films in the lineup have a Long Island connection and were either written, directed, produced by or star Long Islanders. Film goers will also want to keep an eye out for the familiar landmarks–a number of the films were shot in and around the island.
The opening “Best of” presentations night will begin with a lengthy line up of short subject films for both an afternoon and evening program at Creative Arts Studio, a workspace for the expressive arts, located at 256 Sea Cliff Avenue in Sea Cliff on Monday the 23. The February 25-27 dates will take place at the Glen Cove-based Perspective Studios, located at 70 Glen Street in the Pistilli Metro Center in the City Of Glen Cove. Perspective Studios is a leading creator of computer graphic animation and motion capture for feature films, television, commercials and video games.
The four-day event festival will culminate in an awards presentation to the filmmakers, and will also include a special recognition of three Long Islanders who have provided outstanding support and contributions to the visual and performing arts: Dylan Skolnick, co-director of the Cinema Arts Center in Huntington, Carla Santella, Senior Editor of The Boulevard magazine and Jeannine DiMenna, chef of Page One restaurant in Glen Cove.
Mr. Leik scheduled the Sea Cliff and Glen Cove dates as part of the LIFF’s 25th anniversary 2008-2009 ‘Montauk to Manhattan to Los Angeles’ road trip that took the festival to seven different locales. The three consecutive nights in Glen Cove will be the longest stretch that the festival has stayed in one place during this 25th anniversary celebration tour.
The LIFF has also gathered some of the biggest talents in independent film for a producers’ panel discussion on February 25. Those participating include Sam Borowski, the producer of “Rex,” Stan Schofield, director and producer of “Parting Words,” Michael D’Andrea, writer, producer and director of “Peripheral Vision,” Stephanie Silber, producer and director of “Black 47 at Connelly’s” and “Random Lunacy” and other notables. The panel will be moderated by Mary Scott, creator of the production company ‘Make Believe TV’.
The much-anticipated “Music in Film” panel on February 26 at 7:45pm, entitled “Creating a Mood - Advancing the Story” will be moderated by Mr. McNamara, best known for his long-time association with WLIR. Mr. McNamara also pioneered the air play of first wave alternative music during the 1980s. Other distinguished LIMHoF board members plan to serve on the panel itself and offer their valued insights into the art of writing and performing songs, as well as scores, for films.
“Any filmmaker who is serious about his or her craft won’t want to miss the opportunity to hear what these music legends have to say,” said LIFF Executive Assistant Lisa DiPasquale. “They can offer invaluable insight into a key part of filmmaking-how to join film and music.”
The LIFF will also be offering festival-goers a special taste of Long Island this year as Frank Scarola, owner of Scarola Vineyards, offers his fine selection of delicious wines produced from grapes grown on the beautiful North Fork of Long Island. Don’t miss a chance to enjoy some of the regions’ most celebrated wines. A networking after party will take place following the last night’s events at Perspective Studios and will include complimentary hor d’oeuvers, desserts and live music entertainment.
