Rotary Club Sponsors "An Evening Of Broadway" to Raise Funds for Polio Plus
January 24, 2009
Funds will help immunize children throughout the world against polio
(Long Island, N.Y.) The Rotary Club of Northport is sponsoring “An Evening of Broadway” Saturday, April 25 at the John Engeman Theater, 250 Main Street, Northport, from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. All Proceeds from this evening of musical performances will be used to support Rotary’s POLIO PLUS international initiative to immunize all the world’s children against polio. Since the program’s inception in 1985, more than two billion children have received the oral polio vaccine and the reported number of polio cases has dropped 99.8 percent. Today only four countries remain endemic. “With vaccines readily available throughout the world, there is no excuse that any child should be exposed to this tragic disease,” stated John Ross, coordinator of the event and Polio Survivor. “I am a polio survivor and know firsthand the challenges that a child faces when afflicted by this disease. I am committed to doing everything in my power to fight this disease and thank the Rotary Club of Northport and the Engeman Theater in supporting this cause,” he continued.
Recognizing Rotary’s extraordinary efforts and its extensive volunteer network (including The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The World Health Organization, UNICEF, and The World Health Assembly), The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation joined the project in 2007 and awarded Rotary a 100 million dollar grant. Rotary International in turn has agreed to match these funds over a three year period beginning January 1, 2008. All over the world, fundraisers like this one will help Rotary meet this challenge and realize the goal of a polio-free world.
The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a cash bar, light hors d’oeuvres (compliments of The Crossroads Café), Gourmet desserts and Coffee (compliments of Copenhagen Bakery), and piano music by Curtis Salke in the Green Room Piano Bar and Lounge.
The main entertainment, featuring Top Broadway Stars performing Musical Hits from your favorite Broadway Shows, will begin at 8:00 p.m. on the main stage. The talent of these artists along with the elegant atmosphere of this fully renovated theater, is sure to provide the audience with an exceptional evening.
