Adelphi University to Host Open House on its New Pre-College Summer Programs Offered in July 2009
January 15, 2009
(Garden City, N.Y.) Adelphi University’s Performing Arts area will hold an open house on Saturday, January 31, 2009, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY to introduce its three competitive and exciting pre-college programs designed for talented high school students in dance, jazz, and theatre technology and design. These programs, scheduled from July 18 to 29, provide students with the opportunity to be truly immersed in the arts, substantially strengthen their skills, and interact with University faculty and experienced professionals. All students will study in Adelphi’s new state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center, which houses five venues (concert hall, recital hall, black box theatre, dance theatre, and Olmsted Theatre) and receive personalized mentoring and attention by leading artist-faculty, and live at Adelphi’s beautiful and safe Garden City campus. Each 11-day intensive program includes two integrated trips to premiere venues in New York City. When not involved in rehearsals and classes, students will enjoy planned activities both on and off campus.
Below are brief details on the new intensive pre-college programs.
Dance Intensive
Open to all dance students who will be entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in the fall of 2009.
Director: Nicholas Ross
The program is designed to enrich and strengthen the skills and artistry of promising high school aged dancers, and further prepare them for entry into premiere modern dance ensembles and programs at the university level.
Enrolled students will study with leading dance teachers, and learn and perform repertory from some of today’s exciting modern dance companies in New York City. Students will focus on their modern dance and ballet skills while participating in studio classes, master classes, and workshops. The intensive is focused heavily on technique and skill development. Daily ballet and modern technique classes are supplemented by improvisation, partnering, composition, Pilates, repertory, and seminars that focus on injury prevention, dancing in college, and the life of today’s professional dancer. Daily rehearsals are directed toward a final performance.
Jazz Intensive
Open to all jazz students who will be entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in the fall of 2009.
Director: David Lobenstein
This performance-focused program is designed to strengthen the jazz skills and artistry of promising student musicians, ages 14 to 18, and further prepare them for entry into premiere jazz ensembles and programs at the university level.
Students will learn and play alongside esteemed jazz artist-teachers, and be immersed in jazz performance, while participating in small combo rehearsals, master classes, and improvisation workshops.
Students participate daily in instrument specific workshops, jazz combo rehearsals (preparing for a final performance), master classes, theory/improvisation, and jazz listening/history classes, including a trip to a premiere New York City jazz club.
Theatre Intensive
Open to all high school students who will be entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in the fall of 2009.
Director: Sarah Martin
The program is designed to strengthen the design and technology skills of high school students passionate about the look and feel of theatre.
Students will work on scenic and lighting design with professional design faculty, and participate in master classes and workshops on design process, theory and collaboration as led by celebrated regional designers. Hands-on classes will focus around construction, technology, drafting, and painting, with an emphasis given to collaborative creative work.
Students will be learning in Adelphi’s brand new spacious wood, metal-working and scenic painting shops, and drafting classrooms and computer labs dedicated to theatrical design. Additionally, students will explore some of New York City’s great theatre resources, backstage spaces, and exciting productions.
Students will work on four course projects during the program-a scenic painting project, scenic construction, scenic/properties design, and lighting design-projects will be presented at the final showcase at the end of the program. Open shop and studio hours will allow student access to necessary shop equipment beyond the confines of the class time. And faculty will be on hand to monitor student work in these shops.
