Long Island’s Water Suppliers Band Together to Reduce Energy Consumption
December 22, 2008
Melville, NY – Long Island Water Conference (LIWC) Chairman Joe Pokorny announced the successful completion this week of a Request for Proposals (RFP) to help water suppliers reduce the strain on the electrical grid during peak electric demand periods. Energy Curtailment Specialists Inc. (ECS) of Buffalo, N.Y. was awarded the bid to administer the program that involves more than 18 public water suppliers throughout the island.
“It’s vital that everyone does what they can to reduce energy consumption,” said Chairman Pokorny. “The LIWC created this cooperative program to allow water suppliers to receive better cost savings compared to proceeding individually.”
Under this energy curtailment program, suppliers are offering to reduce their electrical demand during formally declared NYISO (New York Independent System Operator) emergencies on the electrical grid. The suppliers will be paid a significant amount of money for curtailing their electric consumption during these emergencies. Besides strategically lowering the demand for electricity, suppliers will assist in preventing dangerous blackouts, and eliminating the need to build peak power plants.
According to preliminary figures complied by ECS, suppliers will save up to 15,540 kilowatt hours during peak demand period and could earn more them $2.4 million over the next five years.
“The LIWC is dedicated to providing Long Island with a pure and plentiful water supply that our customers can trust and depend on,” added Chairman Pokorny. “The environmental and economic benefits of this program go a long way to help us fulfill our commitment to the community.”
