(East Meadow, N.Y.) Jarro Building Industries Corp. has received two prestigious Contractor of the Year (COTY) Awards at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry’s New York City/Long Island chapter’s 2008 Awards Competition. The awards were presented at NARI’s “Evening of Excellence,” held on November 20, 2008 at the Venetian Yacht Club in Babylon.

Jarro won the Gold Award in the “Entire House $250,000 - $500,000” category and the Platinum Award in the “Entire House $500,000 - $1,000,000” category.

The Gold Award was presented for a $433,144 remodel to the Tuchman home in Fresh Meadows, NY. Not having been updated for over 40 years, the home was in need of modernization. The homeowners’ challenges were:

  • A complete remodeling of the existing home to include large functional and spacious rooms for everyday living, and to create a light and airy atmosphere
  • To create a beautiful and functional kitchen with multiple working areas suitable for two cooks, transform their small kitchen into an area large enough to accommodate a table and seat 4-6 comfortably, with sliding doors that open to a covered patio
  • To design a large master bedroom suite with a four-piece bath and balcony off the master bedroom for enjoying the evening sun
  • On-time completion from start to finish, given the demanding interior alterations

Jarro met the goals and completed the work on time. The proposed open floor plan required several walls to be removed, leaving no structural support for the second floor plan. Jarro overcame this obstacle with the installation of new beams and supports. The new open floor plan allowed the rooms to function as one, while at the same time staying true to the character of the original house.

The new kitchen design required the extension of a 12? x 16? extension, with a 6? French wood sliding door opening to a 12? x 12? covered patio. Added design features included custom wood cabinets, stainless steel refrigerator and custom range hood, two large farm sinks with large stainless steel faucets and granite countertops.

By restructuring the second floor and adding approximately 300 square feet to the existing master bedroom, for a new space of 19? x 16?, the homeowners realized the master suite with the special balcony retreat they had desired.

The result was a magnificent four-bedroom, two-and-one-half-bath Cape complete with custom crown moldings and specialty trim. The open floor plan added the light and airy feeling the homeowners requested. “We are very satisfied with this project’s outcome,” said Jarro President Ray Accettella. “The challenges were successfully met within the homeowners’ time frame by Jarro’s talented and professional team of Certified Remodelers, Certified Lead Carpenters, Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodelers and Associate Kitchen and Bath Designers.”

Equal success was achieved in the $635,264 Platinum Award-winning remodel of the Carpenter home in Commack, NY. The family purchased their three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath home in 2005 with the intention of adding a small apartment for Mr. Carpenter’s mother, replacing some windows and updating the kitchen. Jarro’s team of professionals substituted the original intent with a more complicated undertaking, including the following challenges:

  • To construct a spacious apartment extension with a full basement, containing an independent heating system
  • To transform the existing home into a five-bedroom, four-bath Colonial, while keeping the home’s original style
  • To create a large functional kitchen with multiple work areas
  • To complete the above on time, given the demanding alterations

Jarro’s talented team of remodelers accomplished these goals by creating a 900-square-foot extension, which included a luxurious kitchen with an island, living room, dining room, bedroom with walk-in closet, and bath. The construction of a foundation proved to be the most challenging aspect of the job, due to sandy soil, which required additional excavation and shoring.

The challenge of adding two additional bedrooms and three baths required redesigning the entire second floor and a quantity of the first floor. Two bedrooms were added over the existing garage and the master bath was redesigned and expanded to include a double vanity, whirlpool tub and walk-in shower. A breezy Cape Cod style guest bath was added. The addition posed several engineering problems that added several days to an already-tight schedule.

Creating a large and functional kitchen required demolition of a powder room and several walls. The new kitchen was expanded to include double the amount of cabinets and a large island, and featured the latest semi-commercial appliances.

The family’s circumstances posed unique challenges to the on-time completion of this remodel. The family desired to live in the house during the first few months of construction, and the homeowner announced she was pregnant, which also affected the schedule. Adding to the tight schedule was the addition of a unique front portico that was designed by the homeowner.

“Aesthetically, the Carpenter project is exceptional, from the five bedrooms and four baths to the chef’s kitchen and large extension,” said Jarro president Ray Accettella. “The homeowners’ goals were triumphantly accomplished within their specified time frame.” Added Accettella, “Jarro is proud to use the most up-to-date materials, which include ENERGY STAR® kitchen appliances and bath fixtures, windows and siding; and as many ‘green’ building products as possible.”
