(East Meadow, N.Y.) Jarro Building Industries Corp. has received two prestigious awards from the Long Island Builders Institute. The “Double Diamond Commercial Retail” and “Remodeling Whole House Makeover” awards were presented at the 10th annual LIBI awards ceremony, held on November 12, 2008 at the Hilton Long Island in Melville.

The competition was judged by a noted panel of judges from the tri-state area, including Luke Regier, Past President of the Builders Association of the Hudson Valley; Ruth and Sam Ratner, owners of Keller Williams Realty of Central Connecticut; and Carol Smith-Gephart, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Centrex, New Jersey.

Jarro received the “Double Diamond Commercial Retail (up to 20,000 sq. feet)” award for its remodel of the Willow Pet Hotel in Deer Park, NY. The Willow Pet Hotel is Long Island’s oldest and most respected dog and cat boarding establishment. The Rosenzweig family has been running Willow Pet since 1969 and for the last two years they have been trying to come up with a plan to remodel their building. One of the challenges was that they wanted to stay open for business and have their 1,500 square foot building knocked down and build a state-of-the-art 5,000 square foot pet hotel. Wax Ferraro, architect, was able to design this dream for them.

A 50-foot trailer was installed on the north side of the property to facilitate the business, while a fence line was run in order to bring the pets to the back of the kennel to board and keep them away from the construction.

The end result features individual ceramic-tiled rooms with patios, decks, a modern kitchen to cater to a pet’s special dietary needs, and central heating and air conditioning – the perfect “home away from home” for pets. The Rosenzweigs also love the separate, modern cattery and exercise facility for both dogs and cats. The entire facility is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has over 120 dog suites and 40 kitty condos.

“Pets are an important part of the family,” said Jarro president Ray Accettella, “They should be able to experience the same ‘creature comforts’ as humans. We are proud to have worked on this project. The Jarro team really aced the job, given the fact that Willow Pet stayed open the entire time.”

Jarro received the “Remodeling Whole House Makeover” award for its remodel of the Carpenter residence in Commack, NY. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter purchased their four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath home in 2005 with the intention of adding an apartment for Mr. Carpenter’s mother, replacing all the windows and possibly remodeling the kitchen original to the home. After researching builders and seeing Jarro featured in House magazine, Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter met with the Jarro design team to discuss the plan.

After their meeting, the homeowners, with the input of Jarro’s professional design team, were inspired to also add a basement under the apartment expand, remodel the kitchen, add a mudroom with adjoining bath, renovate the master bathroom, and add two bedrooms and a bath over the existing garage to accommodate the expanding family.

With the guidance and detailed attention of the design team, the house now boasts a true chef’s kitchen with a layout to accommodate both the cook’s independent workspace and a welcoming space for guests to linger. The luxurious master bath now has ample space for two including a whirlpool tub, separate shower, radiant heat and a towel warmer. The additional two bedrooms and breezy Cape Cod style bath welcome family and guests all year round.

The mudroom and adjoining bath serve as a practical space for the family to put away coats and shoes after a busy day, do laundry and store everyday essentials out of sight. The separate apartment for Mr. Carpenter’s mother is an oasis that includes a luxurious kitchen, living and dining area, one bedroom with a walk-in closet, a full bathroom and stairs to a 900-square-foot basement.

“Aesthetically, the Carpenter project is exceptional, from the five bedrooms and four baths to the chef’s kitchen and large extension,” said Jarro president Ray Accettella. “The homeowners’ goals were triumphantly accomplished within their specified time frame.” Added Accettella, “Jarro is proud to use the most up-to-date materials, which include ENERGY STAR® kitchen appliances and bath fixtures, windows and siding; and as many ‘green’ building products as possible.”
