lijs.jpg (Plainview, N.Y.) The Top Soccer Special Children’s Program of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) recently celebrated the end of their Fall season and the success of the players with a special dinner and awards ceremony.  Hundreds of boys and girls from the junior and senior divisions of the program shared the evening with their friends and families, thanks to Ann Marie Toth, Chairperson of the Special Children’s Program, and several other dedicated volunteers.

Since the word “loser” is not a part of the vocabulary of the Special Children’s Soccer Program, every player received a trophy and various gifts donated by local companies.  “We are extremely proud of all our players,” stated Addie Mattei-Iaia, President of the LIJSL.  “They have worked hard all season long and showed their dedication to the game on and off the field.”

Approximately 500 Special Children play in the LIJSL. The program is open to any child with mental and/or physical handicap conditions and was initiated to accommodate those children who are not able to participate in a regular or mainstream soccer activity. It provides an opportunity for that child who deviates from the average or normal child in mental, physical or social characteristics to such an extent that he or she requires modified educational practices and services in order to develop to his or her maximum potential.

The LIJSL is a non-profit, educational organization operated by volunteers and serves as an umbrella organization, providing a coaching academy, clinics, tournaments, special competitions, scholarships and special programs for players of all abilities.  One of the largest youth soccer leagues in the United States, the LIJSL has 100 community-based member clubs representing approximately 70,000 players on Long Island and in Queens.
