adelphilogo2.jpg (Garden City, N.Y.) November 2008—Adelphi University Assistant Professors Carson Fox and Jennifer Maloney present “CHROMA,” an exhibition celebrating the complexities of color on display in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY, from Sunday, December 7, 2008 to Thursday, January 15, 2009. A reception will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 6:00 pm.

The Munsell color system, created by Professor Albert H. Munsell, defines chroma as “color purity or colorfulness,” separating it from hue and value as its own independent characteristic of color. In this exhibition, color plays a starring role, linking this diverse group of 13 artists together with their common use of color as the primary objective in the works.

Paintings, prints, photographs, and sculptures range from Gary Petersen’s bold abstractions on canvas to Sarah Peter’s coolly disturbing sculptures of skulls flocked with orange and black baroque patterns. Amanda Church contributes a work of oozing complexity filled with voluptuous shapes ready to spill off the canvas.  Erin O’Keefe creates photographs of highly saturated color taken from constructed set-ups in her studio, while the color in James Siena’s suite of prints (made with Harlan and Weaver, collaborative printmakers) follow a more restrained course, taking a back seat to his intensely complicated, labyrinth like compositions.  Jean Shin’s elegant sculpture, “Seams (Gold Dress),” celebrates the found color in this everyday object, while Sharon Louden’s installation “Motley Tails” explodes with the Kool-aid coloration of commercial monofilament line en masse. Other highlights include works by artists Peter Drake, David Humphrey, Mark Pomilio, Jennifer Maloney, Carson Fox, and Jennifer Coates.
