Help for Pregnancy and Postpartum Depression at Mother’s Centers
October 21, 2008
(Jericho, N.Y.) The vision of a new baby brings smiles and cooing sounds from ordinarily reserved folks. But sometimes the baby’s mother, expecting to be happy and enjoying her baby, faces unexpected difficulty. Perinatal Mood Disorder (including Postpartum Depression) is the most common medical complication related to childbearing. Perinatal depression is a real illness that affects 2 in 10 women during pregnancy and after the birth of a child. Symptoms may include frequent crying, sadness, feeling hopeless, anger, guilt, anxiety, scary thoughts and sometimes thoughts of suicide or hurting the baby. There is help and support available.
In a program made possible by the support of The Roslyn Savings Foundation and Doreen Downs Miller, the Midshore Mothers’ Center in Wantagh, NY and the Mothers’ Center of the South Shore in Sayville, NY provided training for facilitators to offer the Circle of Caring postpartum depression support program. The training, provided by Sonia Murdock, Postpartum Resource Center of New York and Lisa Kaplan-Miller, National Association of Mothers’ Centers, was provided through both Centers’ affiliation with the National Association of Mothers’ Centers (NAMC). Also participating in the training was Marcy Safyer, Director of Adelphi University’s Institute for Parenting, and Professor Tamara Sewell, also from Adelphi’s Parenting Institute.
The participants gave the training rave reviews. Participants also greatly enjoyed hearing the experiences of Social Work Consultant Maureen Beatrice, LMSW and Gina Dowling, Co-facilitator, Mothers’ Center of the South Shore.
The Circle of Caring pregnancy and postpartum depression support group is a 12 week self-help program providing emotional support, education and coping tools for empowerment for women and families experiencing a perinatal mood disorder. The next group will begin on October 8th at the Midshore Mothers’ Center in Wantagh.
