The partnership will include full scholarships to Summer Discovery pre-college enrichment programs.

(New York, NY) - Summer Discovery (http://www.summerfun.com), the world’s leading summer pre-college enrichment program, today announced a strategic partnership with Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation (http://www.turn2foundation.org). The partnership will provide Summer Discovery program scholarships to members of Jeter’s Leader’s, a youth leadership program run by the Turn 2 Foundation.

Summer Discovery has been operated by two generations of the New York-based Musiker family, which started the premier student travel and pre-college enrichment program 42 years ago.

Under the new partnership between Summer Discovery and the Turn 2 Foundation, two members each (four total) in both the New York and Kalamazoo Jeter’s Leaders program will receive full scholarships to participate in the 2009 Summer Discovery programs.  The university-based programs introduce high school students to college-level study in areas of interest and participants gain practical experience as they develop intellectually in their chosen areas.  Summer Discovery has partnerships with some of the world’s most prestigious universities including University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, University of Michigan, UCLA, Northeastern University, UC Santa Barbara, Cambridge University (England), as well as colleges in Spain and Italy.

In addition to the scholarships, Summer Discovery will also provide assistance with the Jeter’s Leaders annual Spring Break College Tours, as well as offer College Readiness workshops to members of Jeter’s Leaders during the program year.

“Teaming up with Summer Discovery is a tremendous opportunity for us,” said Dr. S. Charles Jeter, President of the Turn 2 Foundation.  “We are excited that our Foundation will partner with a world-class organization that shares our mission to help deserving youth realize their potential.  The Foundation looks forward to being able to offer our Leaders new and exciting programs that Summer Discovery is providing to our leaders.”

The Summer Discovery programs feature four, five and six week curriculums that combine academics, culture, social activities, recreation, day and evening activities and weekend excursions.   Students choose classes and fields of study that, in some instances, give them college credits.  The UCLA and Northeastern curriculum offers business internships.  UCLA, Michigan and Northeastern offer courses in sports management.  Penn offers programs in Biomedical Research, Forensic Science and Physics and Georgetown features special programs in law, government, and medical careers.

“Derek Jeter is truly a great role model, not just for youth, but for other professional athletes,” said Bob Musiker, Executive Director of Summer Discovery. “The objective that Derek has for the Turn 2 Foundation and the Jeter’s Leaders program is perfectly positioned with the mission of the Summer Discovery. We are excited to form this partnership and look forward to providing new opportunities to the exceptional young Jeter’s Leaders in New York and Kalamazoo.”

Jeter’s Leaders is a youth leadership, social change program created by Derek Jeter.  It is designed to promote healthy lifestyles, academic achievement, and social change activism among high school students. Members of Jeter’s Leader’s get the opportunity to participate in projects that allow them to learn more about themselves and their community.  The Leaders then take what they learn here and act as positive role models in their community.  The Leaders program institutes Derek’s unique “10 Life Lessons,” as well as the Program’s 10 Pillars of Leadership that help guide the young leaders developed in this program.

About Turn 2 Foundation, Inc.
New York Yankees All-Star shortstop Derek Jeter established the Turn 2 Foundation during his rookie year in 1996 to promote healthy lifestyles amongst youth. The name “Turn 2″ is symbolic of the dramatic double play made by infielders during a game. It also represents Derek’s wish to promote healthy lifestyles among young people and enable them to “turn to” his Foundation for guidance and the much needed help to avoid drugs and alcohol.

The Foundation’s mission is to create and support signature programs and activities that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and “Turn 2″ healthy lifestyles. The Foundation will reward the positive behavior of these children, especially those demonstrating academic achievement and leadership, with the support of sponsors, partners and Turn 2 staff.
