August 31, 2008

McCain’s VP Pick Acknowledged Marijuana Use Reformers Urge McCain to Respect States’ Rights

August 29, 2008

(Washington, D.C.) Noting that his just-announced vice presidential pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, has acknowledged having smoked marijuana, reform advocates today urged Sen. John McCain to respect states’ rights to set their own marijuana policies if he is elected president.

On Aug. 6, 2006, the Anchorage Daily News reported, “Palin said she has smoked marijuana — remember, it was legal under state law, she said, even if illegal under U.S. law — but says she didn’t like it and doesn’t smoke it now.

“‘I can’t claim a Bill Clinton and say that I never inhaled.’” The paper quoted Palin as saying she opposed legalization of marijuana because of the “message” that would be sent to her children.

”Governor Palin is one of many millions of Americans who have used marijuana and gone on to live productive, wildly successful lives,” said Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C. “That she used marijuana is no big deal, but what is a big deal is that she thinks that the 100 million Americans who have used marijuana, including herself, belong in jail. That wouldn’t be good for her kids.

“Perhaps most importantly, Alaska is one of 12 states that allow the medical use of marijuana, and one in five Americans currently live in those states. The heavy hand of the federal government has trampled state authority and tried to interfere with the implementation of these state-level medical marijuana laws. The GOP ticket should embrace the time-honored Republican principle of local control by promising to end the federal government’s war on sensible medical marijuana laws in both red and blue states.”

Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington have medical marijuana laws. New Mexico’s is the latest, passed by the Legislature last year. Montana’s medical marijuana law appeared on the November 2004 ballot, receiving 62 percent of the vote, exceeding George W. Bush’s total of 59 percent.

With more than 25,000 members and 100,000 e-mail subscribers nationwide, the Marijuana Policy Project is the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States. MPP believes that the best way to minimize the harm associated with marijuana is to regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. For more information, please visit http://MarijuanaPolicy.org.

New York State Democratic Leader Addresses Delegation at 43rd National Convention in Denver

August 28, 2008

082808_sen_smith.jpg (DENVER, C.O.) On the final day of the historic Democratic Convention in Denver, Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A. Smith (D-St. Albans) had the honor of addressing the 361- member New York delegation.

In anticipation of Senator Barack Obama’s acceptance of the Democratic Party nomination, Smith discussed the upcoming sixty-nine days of the campaign and the change Senator Obama will bring to get America back on track.

“Last night we witnessed history with the nomination of Senator Barack Obama. It is fitting, that today on the 45th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech, the Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama, will cement his nomination as the first ever African American candidate for President with a speech to an audience of more than 78,000, ” said Senator Smith. “Sadly, Dr. King was unable to witness the full impact of his words but his message of hope and equal opportunity lives on.”

New York Democrats, the nation’s second largest delegation, has rallied behind Senators Obama and Biden and emerged a unified and energized party committed to delivering the changes America needs.

Throughout the week Senator Smith has met with various organizations and elected officials to ensure that the needs of New York State are a part of the national platform. Key issue areas include the economy, alternative energy and lower costs, health care reform and quality education.

“This morning we gathered as a state delegation for the last time of this convention, ready to move forward on a path of change. The next 69 days will shape the future of our state and our nation. Standing behind the team of Obama and Biden, we will put a Democrat in the White House and get America working again,” said Senator Smith.

“The needs of New York mirror the needs of the nation, and the task at hand leading up to this November is identical: a concerted effort to produce the results that Republicans have been quick to promise but slow to deliver, especially in New York,” said Senator Smith.

“From Brooklyn to Buffalo, we must rebuild our economy, putting it back to work for working class families. Once we retake the Senate Majority, Democrats will finally pass the Paid Family Leave bill, and protect thousands of workers who struggle to balance support for a family and the demands of work,” said Senator Smith.

New York’s Democratic platform also includes: measures to prohibit outsourcing by companies that receive state tax breaks but drive away jobs; and enact real property tax relief through fiscal innovation and responsibility, without affecting the ability of children to receive a quality education, concluded Senator Smith.

Dr. Keri Chiappino Offers New Customized Yoga Program to Achieve Mind-Body Wellness

August 27, 2008

Iyengar-based Yoga Program Complements Non-Med Healing Philosophy of Chiropractic Neurology

(Smithtown, NY) – Smithtown Chiropractic Neurologist Dr. Keri Chiappino announced today she has completed the 200 hour Iyengar-based yoga certification program and has incorporated yoga training into her private practice.   As a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT), Dr. Chiappino will offer both private and group workshops to those seeking to better manage their medical conditions without resorting to prescription medication.   Special instructional sessions are also available to yoga practitioners wishing to utilize therapeutic yoga for their clients.

The therapeutic workshops are based on the Iyengar yoga philosophy that uses supportive props to achieve structural alignment of the body through various postures called “asanas.”   These asanas are customized by Dr. Chiappino to target specific body segment issues.   For example, for neck or neurological conditions, a “prescription” for a specific asana will be advised.   Additional postures will be recommended for patients with shoulder, elbow, wrist or hand issues as well as those for lower extremity conditions such as hip, knee, ankle, and foot pain.

A yoga enthusiast, Dr. Chiappino has been personally practicing for 11 years.  The decision to incorporate yoga training complements the holistic wellness vision and therapies utilized in her private practice.   “Yoga achieves balance of the body, spirit, and mind which helps manage everyday stress, both physical and mental.   Similarly, Chiropractic Neurology helps to balance the brain and body by assessing the aspects of the brain that are hypo or hyper functioning and applying various modalities to achieve a balance.  I find the flexibility and training associated with yoga to be a perfect fit with the therapies used for my patients, specifically those suffering from chronic pain, depression, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, migraines, vertigo or failing balance due to aging.  By modifying various postures for my patients’ specific issues, I create a customized mind-body exercise program that helps achieve maximum health benefit.  The focus here, as in Chiropractic Neurology, is on individualized attention to create balance in the body.”

Yoga workshops will begin this fall.   For more information or to register for an upcoming workshop, contact Dr. Chiappino at New Life Chiropractic 631 265 1223 or visit www.newlifechiropractic.com

New York State Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A Smith, Democrats Poised To Take Back White House

August 25, 2008

082508_sen_clinton.jpg (DENVER, CO)— A united party is the message Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A. Smith (D – St. Albans) plans to bring home from the Democratic National Convention in Denver that kicked-off today.

Senator Smith, a Pledged Leader, is among 361 delegates representing New York, the nation’s second largest delegation. The delegates arrived in the Mile-High City over the past weekend to stand united behind presumptive presidential nominee, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and his running mate, Senator Joe Biden of Delaware.

“The Democrats are unified. We want to show the country that once we leave Denver, we’re going to come back with enthusiasm and focus on retaking the White House and regaining the jobs, homes and economic prosperity that was lost under eight years of Republican rule. In Senator Barack Obama, Democrats have a nominee who can unite the party and rebuild the economy in New York and across the nation,” said Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith.

Leading up to the mid-week vote on the Democratic presidential nominee, Senator Smith will meet with various organizations and elected officials to ensure that the needs of New York state are a part of the national platform. Key issue areas include the economy, alternative energy and health care, among others.

New York State Democrats, mirroring the key concerns that Democrats nationally want to see in the platform, seek to alleviate the burden on the middle class and make sure they have every option to achieve the American Dream. The recent naming of Senator Biden as Senator Obama’s running mate is key to that platform.

”To protect jobs, create new ones and bring our economy back to working for New Yorkers, we need a change; and that change is Senator Barack Obama. My fellow state senators and I look forward to working with him to ensure that there will be a Democrat in the White House and a change in our economy,” said Senator Smith.

Other New York Democratic Senators attending the National Convention include: Eric Adams (Brooklyn), Martin Malave Dilan (Brooklyn), Tom Duane (Manhattan), Ruth Hassell-Thompson Bronx/Mount Vernon), Craig Johnson (Port Washington), Liz Krueger (Manhattan), Kevin Parker (Brooklyn), Bill Perkins (Harlem), John Sampson (Brooklyn), Diane Savino (Staten Island/Brooklyn), Jose Serrano (Manhattan/Bronx), Toby Ann Stavisky (Queens), Andrea Stewart-Cousins (Yonkers), Antoine Thompson (Buffalo/Niagara Falls) and David Valesky (Oneida).

Long Island Website LongIslandExchange.com Releases 2008 Media Kit

August 25, 2008

press.gif (Long Island, N.Y.) Long Island Exchange (http://www.longislandexchange.com), one of the webs largest Long Island and locally based websites, is proud to announce it has released its 2008 media kit. The report details some of the best statistical user data ever released to the public by the company.

According to many reports which have been released over the last few years, Local search, i.e., searching for local businesses and destinations is an important trend for small businesses to get educated about. Most small businesses do the majority of their business locally, within a 60-mile radius. Long Island being only 118 miles wide plays a very unique role when evaluating this type of research. Small business owners on Long Island trying to do their own online marketing, especially those who do it in-house, need to be aware of the evolutions in this area.

The hypothesis is simple. If you do most of your business locally, and you do not want to throw money down the drain, you should make sure you educate yourself about local search marketing and get good at it. For instance, if you do most of your business near Long Island New York, you do not want to spend your budget, be-it large or small, on attracting visitors to your website or business from elsewhere. Small businesses need to target their online advertising dollars to attract traffic from the specific areas they can serve. LongIslandExchange.com helps effectively conquer this problem for many local businesses as its visitors are rarely from elsewhere (see report link below).

LongIslandExchange.com is one of the busiest and most visited web sites in the Long Island area. We designed this media kit to help local businesses understand where our website traffic is coming from, as well our users’ activity while they are using the website. The report details exactly which regions these visitors are coming from and how long on average they are viewing our web pages. Although we’re releasing information on user activity, the report in no way identifies any user specifically or breaches our privacy agreements or should otherwise raise cause for concern from our visitors. This report is basic user and traffic data for the purpose of validating and understanding the website. If you have a business on Long Island, you’re invited to review the media kit and visit our web site to have your business listed with Long Island Exchange” said owner and Chief Executive Officer John Colascione.
