Senator Bill Perkins Marches with Elected Officials, Community Members and Leaders Against Recent Acts of Racism

July 24, 2008

(Harlem, N.Y.) – Thursday, July 24 – State Senator Bill Perkins (D-Harlem) and others are continuing calls for action against New York City Police officers who drove through Harlem Tuesday evening with a black infant baby doll head affixed to their car antennae.

Today Perkins joined Senate Colleague, Jose Serrano (D-Manhattan / Bronx), NAACP President, Hazel Dukes, City Councilmembers Inez E. Dickens, Robert Jackson, Miguel Martinez and Melissa Mark-Viverito and District Leaders, Keith Lilly and Cordell Cleare and community members and leaders to march in protest of the recent terror tactics at the hands of New York City Police and called for a formal investigation and public apology.

“We wanted an apology and we were given an excuse. We wanted an investigation and we got ‘It was a prank,’” Perkins said. “Without both an investigation and public apology for this demeaning, disgusting and racist action, the distrust between the Harlem community and police will worsen.”

Since community members approached Senator Perkins about the incident, he has led the charge calling for a public apology, a full investigation and that those responsible be held accountable.

Multiple reports confirmed that on the evening of Tuesday, July 22 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., an unmarked NYPD car drove through Harlem in the vicinity of 116th Street and Fifth Avenue with the dolls head atop the car’s antennae. At the time Senator Perkins was attending a ribbon cutting in the neighborhood when he was approached by several outraged witnesses to the act.

Perkins joined community members to denounce this behavior by the NYPD and together they are calling on police to do the same.  Still without an apology or formal investigation, protesters gathered at the foot of Marcus Garvey Park at 120th Street and Fifth Avenue at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 24th.  Marchers proceeded to 116th Street & Fifth Avenue where the incident was first reported.

Senator Smith Urges Special Session to Address Property Tax

July 24, 2008

(Queens, N.Y.) -Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A. Smith (D-St. Albans) today praised Governor David Paterson for his willingness to move the property tax debate forward and also urged the Legislature to address high energy costs. He repeated his call for action now, rather than continuingn delays in addressing the two most pressing issues—the burden of high property taxes and the anticipated high fuel costs that will affect New Yorkers this winter.

In calling for property tax relief, Senator Smith praised Governor Paterson’s property tax proposal, which has provoked debate and forced the Legislature to deal with property taxes that threaten to drive New Yorkers from their homes.

“I commend Governor Paterson for pushing the property tax issue to the forefront,” said Senator Smith. “New Yorkers are hurting right now with the rising costs of taxes, food, fuel, and health care. A tax cap proposal, while not perfect, has forced the Legislature to consider solutions to diminish the burden.”

Governor Paterson’s proposed property tax would set a cap on the tax levy and would grant residents the ability to vote to adopt levy increases less than the cap.

A recent poll conducted by the Siena Research Institute showed 74 percent of New York State residents support some form of a tax cap. A subsequent poll showed a similar degree of support for a circuit breaker that would grant property tax relief to low and middle income New Yorkers.

Senator Smith stated that he understands that there may be a special session held in August. He joins his Democratic colleagues in urging the Senate Republicans to address these critical issues, which they have thus far failed to do. He further indicated that there will be several property tax proposals submitted, to be introduced by Senate Deputy Democratic Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx), Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Westchester) and Senator Eric Schneiderman (D-Manhattan).

The home heating relief legislative package, among other things, would increase the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) income eligibility levels to assist more families this winter as they face high fuel prices. The package will also include proposed reforms to the existing Weatherization Program.

Senators Kevin Parker (D-Brooklyn) and Ruth Hassell-Thompson (D-Bronx) will introduce separate energy bills with a multi-pronged approach to fuel costs.

Senator Smith is urging that these proposals be enacted this summer.

Dr. Keri Chiappino Adopts Defeat Autism Now!® Philosophy

July 23, 2008

Holistic Approach Treats Underlying Causes of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Complements Chiropractic Neurology Principles

(Smithtown N.Y.)- Smithtown Chiropractic Neurologist Dr. Keri Chiappino announced today her adoption of the Defeat Autism Now! Approach and her inclusion on the registry of Defeat Autism Now! Practitioners created by the Autism Research Institute (ARI).  Dr. Chiappino is among a growing group of clinicians who advocate individualized biomedical and Chiropractic Neurological therapies for children diagnosed with neurological disorders such as autism.

“Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are dysfunctions of the neurologic, metabolic, immune and/or digestive systems.   The Defeat Autism Now! philosophy and the field of Chiropractic Neurology share core beliefs, most importantly the need to address the underlying causes of the symptoms.   Both recognize the need for customizable therapies as each child presents his/her unique set of issues and offer a variety of biomedical and non-drug, brain-based therapy options for custom-tailoring effective rehabilitative programs.  I expect the Defeat Autism Now! diagnostic and treatment options, combined with the neurological therapies comprising my Maximum Achievement ProgramSM (MAP), will enhance the ability to detect and address the underlying causes of the symptoms of autism in my patients.”

The Defeat Autism Now! approach is based on the unique symptoms, history, examinations, and biomedical testing of each child.  It includes a broad range of modalities that are appropriate to each individual to address the medical illnesses associated with autism such as food allergies, digestive, bowel, and auto-immune disorders.  This philosophy advocates treating the child holistically through diets, supplements and other biomedical procedures.

MAP was created by Dr. Chiappino in 2003 and supports the approach that balancing brain function restores neurological health, enabling a child to perform at full potential.  MAP is comprised of various Chiropractic Neurological modalities that are customized to each patient’s individual deficits, such as cognitive exercises, visual therapy, vestibular therapy, and physical therapy.  The goal is to improve the function of the brain that controls all aspects of health in order to help combat the symptoms of ASD, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as other learning disorders and ultimately achieve maximum health results.

About Dr. Keri Chiappino and New Life Chiropractic

Dr. Keri Chiappino offers a unique, expanded approach to alternative health care.  Her private family practice, New Life Chiropractic, is dedicated to chronic conditions that severely disable people, including patients with Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, vertigo, migraines, asthma, depression, anxiety and other neurological disorders.   She is a Defeat Autism Now! Practitioner specializing in restoring brain balance in children diagnosed with learning disabilities, ADHD, Tourette’s Syndrome, Dyslexia, and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).   Utilizing non-invasive therapies that comprise her unique Maximum Achievement Program (MAP), Dr. Chiappino has been successful in improving brain functionality in children with ASD, enabling them to perform at full potential.

Dr. Chiappino has distinguished herself as one of only 600 doctors worldwide achieving Diplomatic status on the American Chiropractic Neurological Board (ACNB), with over 1000 hours in Chiropractic Neurology coursework.  To learn more about Dr. Chiappino’s brain and body wellness programs, contact the Smithtown, Long Island office at 631 265 1223 or the Manhattan office at 212 721 1188; or visit www.newlifechiropractic.com.

The Artists Group breaks Theater Performance History at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts

July 23, 2008

debra_ann_kasimakis.jpg (Long Island, N.Y.) What event in the Earth’s history sparks the imagination more than the moment of creation? An ongoing debate that has explanations in religion, science and mythology. Now we can add another point of view to that list, “Artmosphere”, the creation of the universe as interpreted by Debra Ann Kasimakis and being brought to the stage of Tilles Center by the talent that is the Artists Group. “It’s funny to think back on it all” Debra said recently,” I was asked to participate in a DesignerShowcase and The Kasimakis Karmic Kontainer was born, an “old” wicker trunk that had been rescued, from places hither-to unknown. A painting was created for the inside lid of the trunk. Parcae & the Birth of the Universe.” From this simple piece of art has developed an amazing show.

The Artists Group started after a fundraising event for the Hicksville Gregory Museum in 2004, The Art of Paleontology. This event consisted of Long Island based artists & artisans selling their wares, a performance stage with local dance companies, poets, & musicians. But, the highlight of the two day event, which was held in the three days between hurricanes Bonnie & Charlie, was the 12 visual artists recreating Paleolithic images on fiberglass boulders live on themuseum grounds. The patrons of the event were amazed to see the creative process and the artists were gratified by the interaction and the immediate response from the public. This core of artists has grown into a collection of talent that includes dancers, poets, photographers, musicians and more. Under the direction of it’s founders, Hicksville natives, Debra Ann Kasimakis and Robert Goida, the group has set up many programs throughout Long Island. “History in Bloom - GoldCoast Gardens” is currently on exhibit at Cedarmere in Rosyln and the group maintains a year round rotational art program at Briarcliff College in Patchogue. “One of our biggest programs, however is “Art Under Glass”, a collaboration between The Artists Group and Tilles Center.” said Robert Goida “The rotational program fills the Atrium at Tilles each season with a new and exciting piece of sculptural art.” So far they have presented the works of Adam Brown, Laurette Kovary and Max Yawney and this upcoming season “Spirit of Movement” by Debra Ann Kasimakis will fill the space. “The way this has come together is kind of crazy.” she said recently. “The art committee at Tilles picked which pieces would be displayed and in which order three years ago, long before Artmosphere was even a thought.”

“Artmosphere” is a display, a live piece of art, a simultaneous participation of several disciplines with the involvement of the visual arts in a dynamic way. What sparked the initial thought was the idea that visual artists never get a chance to perform live. This concept then began to evolve into a collaborative show featuring music, dance and poetry as well as visual artand a performance was born. The audience will feel the air as the dancers whiz right by them, and they too will share the stage for this show. In this way, the sensory experience will surround the audience. Elliott Sroka, Executive Director of Tilles Center, and Dr. Cara Gargano. Chair of the C.W. Post Department of Theater Film and Dance, both embraced the idea for it’s unique and groundbreaking approach to theater. And from this a show was born. “I can’t believe we are actually going to perform this piece of artwork, LIVE ! I have been searching for something similar to “Artmosphere” and there seems to be nothing else that combines all of these elements in one live performance.” Kasimakis said,” When we first thought about doing this it was totally conceptual. But, when we actually got the go ahead, it became very real and serious indeed. Weall needed to bring it to from a thought to the stage!” The list of performers in “Artmosphere” span Long Island from north to south and east to west. Artists Andrew Leipzig from Sayville, Alan Semerdjian from Huntington, Laurette Kovary from East Norwich, composers Jane Leslie of Long Beach, Jay Jii from Northport and Joe Satriani, San Francisco by way of Carle Place, demonstrate the reach of this project and its focus, Long Island creativity. “Our dancers and musicians come fromBrooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk, even though some claim that the first two are not really Long Island, they seem to be attached on the map I have.” laughed Goida “This show is a collaboration of many talented individuals and we would like to invite you to become a part of “Artmosphere”. With only 200 seats available for each performance, this is that rare opportunity to be part of theater history.”

“Artmosphere” will have four performances at Tilles Center this September on the fourth through the seventh, all shows are at 8pm and tickets are $30. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com, www.tillescenter.org, or by phone at Tillescharge 516-299-3100. For more information about Artmosphere or The Artists Group visit the website www.debbydoll.com

Artmosphere OPENS the fall season at Tilles with a show unlike any other that has graced its stage — a multimedia extravaganza that envelopes the audience, making it a part of the performance, part of the ARTMOSPHERE. Never before seen Visual Art created live right in front of the audience as they share the stage with the performers on September 4, 5 , 6 and 7, 2008 8PM.

Long Island Resident Finds Treasure in Florida

July 23, 2008

barbara_hayes.jpg (Stuart, F.L.) — Long Island resident Lisa Gagliano was the first visitor to find ‘hidden treasure’ in the Martin County (Florida) Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Summer Treasures campaign.

Gagliano, a resident of Seaford, New York, found the small glass and gold adorned treasure chest containing Mardi Gras beads, silver and gold doubloons and while visiting the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, Florida with her children. Included in the chest was an entry form for a chance to win real treasure. Gagliano’s mother Barbara Hayes returned the chest and entry form for her daughter, who returned to New York the day after finding the chest.

According to Mary Palczer, the interim executive director of the Martin County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Gagliano didn’t come to Martin County because of the treasure hunts. However, after stumbling upon the chest and learning more about the campaign, Palczer shared vacationing on the Treasure Coast will probably have new meaning for the Gagliano family.

Every day of July, four treasure chests are being randomly hidden throughout Martin County. Locations include parks, attractions, downtowns, shopping centers and other venues tourists to the area may visit. At the end of July, one lucky treasure hunter will win the real deal—jewelry—including an exact reproduction of an actual Spanish treasure coin from the Atocha minted with silver actually salvaged from the legendary galleon that was sunk by a hurricane in 1622 twenty miles west of the Florida Keys.

In addition to the hidden treasure chest hunt, a summer-long old-fashioned self-guided hunt, complete with treasure map and riddles, takes participants coast-to-coast (Atlantic Ocean to Lake Okeechobee) across Martin County to points of historic interest or importance, landmarks, as well as area attractions. Treasure Hunters who ‘discover’ or correctly answer the most number of riddles and clues will have a chance to win a six-day, five-night vacation at the Hutchinson Island Marriot Resort and Marina, plus a gift card for $500 worth of gas.

Also in July (Saturday, July 26), a high-tech one-day geo caching treasure hunt using global positioning system (GPS) devices will guide treasure seekers to destinations throughout historic downtown Stuart. Treasure hunters who find more than three caches will have a chance to win a three-day, two-night stay at the Caribbean Shores Resort in Jensen Beach and a $500 gas card.

Located on Florida’s east coast, just a two hour drive from Miami or Orlando, Martin County offers visitors a vacation paradise with no high-rise buildings, no crowds, and miles of waterways and pristine beaches, featuring the charm and authenticity that made Florida famous.

Summer Treasures runs through September 30. For more information visit www.MartinCountyFLA.com or call 877-585-0085.

52-Piece Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Exhibit Comes to Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community

July 22, 2008

shattered.jpg (Setauket, N.Y.) The Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) nationwide quilt exhibit, “Alzheimer’s: Forgetting Piece by Piece,” will be traveling to Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community on September 19-21, 2008.The exhibit showcases 52 full-sized quilts of emotion-filled illustrations and beautiful tributes to loved ones taken by Alzheimer’s. An artist statement is paired with each quilt to offer insight to his or her design of heartbreak and hope. The event will be open to the public and held in conjunction with Alzheimer’s Awareness Day and Jefferson’s Ferry’s second annual Mini-Memory Walk on Saturday, September 20.

AAQI, founded in 2006, is an internet-driven, grassroots, totally volunteer effort to raise awareness and fund research through art. The Michigan based non-profit corporation has raised more than $157,000 for various chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association during 2006 and 2007. “My mother is one of 5.1 million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease,” says Ami Simms, Founder and Executive Director. “I began the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative because I think it is possible to make a difference, one quilt at a time.”

Alzheimer’s is a progressive and degenerative brain disease that kills brain cells and causes the loss of memories, life skills, and the ability to reason and learn. “Quilters across the United States are threading their needles in the hopes of bringing a cure for Alzheimer’s disease one stitch closer,” says Simms. To date an estimated 192,000 people nationwide have attended the “Alzheimer’s: Forgetting Piece by Piece” exhibit in support of this great cause.

This will be the first showing of “Alzheimer’s: Forgetting Piece by Piece” in the New York/Tri-State Area. “Jefferson’s Ferry is honored to host the 52 piece quilt exhibit,” says Karen Brannen, Executive Director at Jefferson’s Ferry. “Just within our community, there are many residents, caregivers and families who have been affected by this insidious disease. But, with as many as 5 million people living with Alzheimer’s, the exhibit is a wonderful way of sharing information and emotions with the Long Island Community.”

Jefferson’s Ferry is Long Island’s premier, non-profit, continuing care retirement community (CCRC) for individuals 62 and up.  Sponsored by the Mather/St. Charles Health Alliance, Jefferson’s Ferry offers residents the opportunity to enjoy a quality life free of worry about future health care needs while affording them the opportunity to follow their passions and discover new interests.

For more information on the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative or Jefferson’s Ferry, please contact Mary Walter-Shafer at mshafer@jeffersonsferry.org or 631-650-2613.  Details about the exhibit can be found at www.alzquilts.org.

Artist Statement:

Alzheimer’s is a horrible, dreadful disease. The body stay but the loved one disappears. My mother-in-law, Dorothy, has it. She is dying the death she most feared – the death of her mother. Fortunately she no longer remembers that fear. But then again, she remembers no one.

My mother-in-law’s arms are crossed and shattered in this quilt. The hands of my husband, son, and myself are lovingly open and reaching out. I wished this made a difference, I pray it does. However, it is difficult to know, since she no longer remembers who we are. It is not easy, this long good-bye.
