Senator Bill Perkins Marches with Elected Officials, Community Members and Leaders Against Recent Acts of Racism

July 24, 2008

(Harlem, N.Y.) – Thursday, July 24 – State Senator Bill Perkins (D-Harlem) and others are continuing calls for action against New York City Police officers who drove through Harlem Tuesday evening with a black infant baby doll head affixed to their car antennae.

Today Perkins joined Senate Colleague, Jose Serrano (D-Manhattan / Bronx), NAACP President, Hazel Dukes, City Councilmembers Inez E. Dickens, Robert Jackson, Miguel Martinez and Melissa Mark-Viverito and District Leaders, Keith Lilly and Cordell Cleare and community members and leaders to march in protest of the recent terror tactics at the hands of New York City Police and called for a formal investigation and public apology.

“We wanted an apology and we were given an excuse. We wanted an investigation and we got ‘It was a prank,’” Perkins said. “Without both an investigation and public apology for this demeaning, disgusting and racist action, the distrust between the Harlem community and police will worsen.”

Since community members approached Senator Perkins about the incident, he has led the charge calling for a public apology, a full investigation and that those responsible be held accountable.

Multiple reports confirmed that on the evening of Tuesday, July 22 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., an unmarked NYPD car drove through Harlem in the vicinity of 116th Street and Fifth Avenue with the dolls head atop the car’s antennae. At the time Senator Perkins was attending a ribbon cutting in the neighborhood when he was approached by several outraged witnesses to the act.

Perkins joined community members to denounce this behavior by the NYPD and together they are calling on police to do the same.  Still without an apology or formal investigation, protesters gathered at the foot of Marcus Garvey Park at 120th Street and Fifth Avenue at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 24th.  Marchers proceeded to 116th Street & Fifth Avenue where the incident was first reported.

These people are among the dumbest people I have ever read about in my entire life. Before the facts have been established, they want apologies? The fact is that many ghetto blacks are less interested in the truth than in having yet another excuse to wallow in self pity and express misguided anger at “the man”. They’re clinically addicted to it and it’s about time this reality was acknowledged.

It seems obvious to me that the doll was put on the cops car by some kids. Why the hell would two cops put a black baby doll’s head on their car, knowing what kind of reaction they would get from people as uppity as this?

As soon as it has been established that the dolls head was put there by pranksters, everyone who has been yelling and whining about this should offer a complete apology to the officers involved. I am sick of this ridiculousness coming from the ghetto. All they’re doing is showing themselves up to be irrational and dumb, all of which no doubt does little to attract economic investment to their neighborhoods. Who the hell wants to start a business there and have to employ idiots like this? These outspoken politicians do nothing but invite ridicule to the black community and it’s about time they were silenced.

Such morons. Reading this story literally made me turn red with embarrassment for them.

I agree. This is a minor incident. If these people put their energy in assuring that guns don’t get into their children’s hands, that their children get a proper education, that they don’t litter and trash Harlem’s streets, instead of fixating on fighting the police, their lives and everyone’s lives would be better. It is disgusting that lame politicians like Bill Perkins panders to this crap. All the politicians want in the ghetto is to seem like heros to people who are misguided and as a results blacks will continue to kill blacks. Because so called community leaders lead them down the wrong path.
