New Radio PSAs Tackle Marijuana Controversies

July 31, 2008

Marijuana Policy Project Foundation Spots Feature New Mexico’s Former Republican Governor, California Superior Court Judge

(Washington, D.C.) A series of new radio public service announcements being distributed today to stations nationwide seeks to educate the public about the effects of U.S. marijuana laws, and about recent developments regarding medical marijuana. The new spots, produced by the Marijuana Policy Project Foundation, feature Gary Johnson, the former Republican governor of New Mexico, and California Superior Court Judge Jim Gray.

To listen to the new PSAs, go to http://www.mpp.org/media/radio-public-service-announcements.html.

The PSAs, which come in both 30- and 60-second versions, focus on little-known facts rarely reported in the news media. Johnson, whose state is the latest to pass a medical marijuana law, discusses the steady stream of studies finding that marijuana has medical benefits for certain illnesses and symptoms, and the acknowledgment of those benefits by groups like the American College of Physicians. Judge Gray focuses on the little-reported failures of marijuana prohibition, asking listeners, “Did you know that since the federal government first banned marijuana in 1937, usage in this country has actually gone up by 4,000 percent?”

The new spots follow a previous set of MPP Foundation radio PSAs released in 2005, featuring TV talk show host Montel Williams, author Tom Robbins, and U.S. Supreme Court medical marijuana plaintiff Angel Raich. That series of spots received over 11,000 plays on stations in all parts of the country, including seven of the top 10 markets.

With more than 25,000 members and 100,000 e-mail subscribers nationwide, the Marijuana Policy Project is the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States. MPP believes that the best way to minimize the harm associated with marijuana is to regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. For more information, please visit http://MarijuanaPolicy.org.

LIPA, CL&P Activate Replacement Cables in Long Island Sound Helps meet reliability needs in Connecticut and New York

July 30, 2008

(Berlin, C.t.) - The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P), part of the Northeast Utilities System (NYSE: NU), and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) today announced that the Long Island replacement cables between Connecticut and New York have been energized ahead of the original fall schedule, improving regional reliability for electric customers this summer.

The companies replaced seven fluid-filled transmission cables between Norwalk, Connecticut, and Northport, New York, with three new solid-core 138-kilovolt cables - improving reliability of electric service to both states and reducing environmental impacts resulting from damage of the existing cables.  The $129 million replacement cables carry up to 300 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to meet the electricity demands of about 300,000 average-sized homes.

Recently, LIPA officials received temporary approval from the State of New York Public Service Commission to energize the Northport-Norwalk cables.  Final burial in New York waters is scheduled to be completed in
September.

The original underwater cables had been in service since 1969 and had been damaged over the years from fishing vessels, working barges and ship anchors.  In 2002, co-owners CL&P and LIPA formally proposed replacing the cables with new, advanced technology.  The new cables have a solid, inert core and will be completely buried under the seabed.  The upgraded cables and the innovative method of installation, using an underwater jet plow system, make them more secure from damage by ship traffic and anchors.

“Long Island Sound enters a new era with the replacement cables,” said Kevin S. Law, LIPA President and Chief Executive Officer.  “The replacement cables provide LIPA with the opportunity to continue to meet customer needs while reducing environmental impacts.  This project has far-reaching long-term benefits not only for customers, but to the environment of both New York and Connecticut.”

“I am extremely pleased that the Long Island replacement cables are now energized, improving reliability for electric customers in Connecticut and New York,” said Charles W. Shivery, NU Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer.  “The Long Island Replacement Cable project is an example of how new technology can help enhance reliability for the region in an environmentally friendly way.”

In energizing the project ahead of schedule for the summer peak load period, CL&P and LIPA officials acknowledged the extraordinary teamwork, collaboration and cooperation from both companies, principal contractor Nexans and its chief subcontractor Durocher Marine, as well as from various federal, Connecticut and New York State agencies such as the Connecticut Siting Council, Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, New York Public Service Commission, New York Department of Environmental Conservation, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and from the City of Norwalk, Connecticut, and the Town of Huntington, New York.

###

The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P) has been part of everyday life in Connecticut for more than 100 years, providing safe and reliable electric service to homes, neighborhoods and businesses.  With 1.2 million customers in 149 cities and towns, CL&P is an active member in the communities it serves, offering programs in energy conservation, economic development and environmental education.  CL&P is part of the
Northeast Utilities System (NYSE: NU).

LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric provider, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens.  LIPA is the 2nd largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, 3rd largest in terms of customers served and the 7th largest

ClickBank Profiteer Raids Google for $1500 Every Day, Offers The Secret

July 30, 2008

(Long Island, N.Y.) A highly successful Clickbank affiliate marketing multimillionaire has announced that he is offering Google AdWords success secrets and affiliate marketer training in the software for only a fraction of the cost it took him to discover them. Click here for product page..

A man who calls himself “Chris” says he spent nine months and $60,000 of his own fortune to crack the codes of those he calls the “shadow elite”–a totally secretive group of Internet affiliate marketing insiders who know the most powerful secrets of making millions of dollars almost effortlessly with Google AdWords and website “splash pages”. This shadow elite does not want its secrets known because it doesn’t like competitors. But Chris shadowed the shadow elite and applied his own expertise to figure out their methods. He says there’s so much money to be made in the already $6 billion a year Internet Clickbank affiliate marketing industry that he fears no competition, and that’s why he’s willing to sell the secrets through his proprietary software and e-book that can allow anybody to join the “shadow elite”.

He calls his product Google Nemesis.

“I’ve created the ultimate ‘point and click’ software tool which [my team and I] have already used to raid Google for gains like $69,853 in 48 days and $1,477 in 24 hours” says Chris. “I am the man who single-handedly launched the fastest selling affiliate training guide in the industry, and trained over 30,000 ClickBank wealth-seekers using my underground tactics. For the past three years I have lived, breathed, studied, and practically spent every minute ‘shadowing’ the biggest, best, and most successful underground Clickbank affiliates in the Internet Marketing industry”

When Chris first cracked the code of the shadow elite, he tested their methods and made himself $42,150 in less than two weeks–and he did this by working at it for less than an hour a day.

He continues, “This new method of profiting takes very little time once you are up to speed. Most affiliates spend hours setting up their campaigns, tweaking their ad spend, and struggling to guess where the money was being made. The shadow elite approach seemed to dispense with all of that. The maximum time needed was just a few hours each week –- on many days, there was no action to be taken whatsoever. Moreover, I discovered that the shadow elite have access to their own secret software which did most of the work for them. It reduced hours of work to a couple of clicks”

Chris also points out that he knows most affiliate marketers have been burned and lost a lot of money and wasted a lot of time checking out other offers that seem similar to his own. But he is confident that his new system is one-of-a-kind and that all his testing has proven it real, and it will prove itself real to anyone who buys it.

As an affiliate marketer, with his software and system, you don’t need to know a thing about affiliate marketing to profit from it because his team has designed the system so that even a nine year old can operate it. You don’t need a website because the push-button software will create an unlimited number of cash-pulling web pages for you quickly and easily, without you having to learn a single thing about HTML. And, you don’t need piles of money to invest in marketing because their tool actually predicts conversion rates; the amount needed to launch a campaign is reduced to near nothingness.

“You can get started within 30 minutes [and] clone my exact blueprint [because] Google Nemesis is not about some academic theory” says Chris. “You can profit part-time, working only a few minutes each day. Once you’re up to speed, the entire process will take as little as 20 minutes per day. I like to make my money and live my life –- and I always tell my students to work at their own pace. It’s your life, and with money as a non-issue, you can finally live it” he concludes.

Google Nemesis is proprietary software and a downloadable guide created by a multimillionaire Internet marketer to allow everyday people to use the same money-making secrets as the most successful and wealthy Clickbank and Google AdWords affiliate marketers. Long Island Bluegrass Festival Set for Aug. 16

July 29, 2008

Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass Headline Family-Friendly Event

(Long Island, N.Y.) The Long Island Bluegrass Festival will take place at Tanner Park on Kerrigan Road, near the Great South Bay, in Copiague, NY on Saturday, Aug. 16, from noon-8 p.m.  Presented by the Babylon Arts Council and the Town of Babylon, the festival will be headlined by Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass and also will feature performances by Buddy Merriam & Back Roads, James Reams & the Barnstormers, Too Blue, Acoustic Electrix, Free Grass Union, Michael Daves and Blue Detour.

Now in its sixth year, the family-friendly festival — for which admission is $10 for adults and free for children under 12 — also will include workshop tents, plenty of opportunities for jamming, music and activities for children, crafts, and a food court.  Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Headliners Dan Paisley and the Southern Grass perform a distinctive brand of hard-driving bluegrass.  The group’s members — Dan Paisley on guitar and expressive lead and tenor vocals, Michael Paisley on acoustic bass, T.J. Lundy on Fiddle, Bobby Lundy on banjo and baritone vocals, and Donnie Eldreth on mandolin and harmony vocals — live in Delaware and Pennsylvania. However, their sound, like their family heritage, is rooted in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia.  The Paisleys’ and Lundys’ fathers played bluegrass together for many years as the Southern Mountain Boys, while Eldreth’s dad is a former member of the Southern Grass.

“Our songs capture the spirit of traditional bluegrass,” says Paisley.  “They represent the type of music that our fathers played, recorded and passed on to us.”  Regulars on the festival and concert circuit across the U.S., and adept at both ballads and hoedowns, Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass have recorded more than a dozen albums.  The group’s latest, The Room Over Mine, was recently released on Rounder. “This is so good I don’t know how to deal with it,” says contemporary bluegrass star Alison Krauss. “Bluegrass music has been waiting for a record like this for a long, long time.”

Buddy Merriam & Back Roads play a mix of traditional favorites and original tunes.  Merriam has been making and playing bluegrass and mandolin music in the Northeast for more than 30 years.  A friend and disciple of Bill Monroe, the “father of bluegrass,” the Long Island resident has toured nationally and internationally, has released five albums, and hosts  “Blue Grass Time” Wednesday nights on WUSB 90.1 FM.

New York City-based James Reams & The Barnstormers has been performing its soulful, straight-up brand of old-school bluegrass in these here parts and beyond since 1993.  Fronted by southeastern Kentucky-bred Reams on guitar and lead vocals, the band performs traditional bluegrass with an old-time country edge and three-part harmonies.

Rounding out the lineup are Too Blue, a contemporary bluegrass quartet whose members hail from Connecticut and New York;  Michael Daves, a 31-year old Atlanta-bred and Brooklyn-based vocalist and guitarist; and local bluegrass outfits Acoustic Electrix, Blue Detour and Free Grass Union.

More information on the Long Island Bluegrass Festival is available online at www.babylonarts.com or by calling (631) 587-3696

Senator Bill Perkins Denounces Retaliatory Arrest of Individual

July 28, 2008

Senator Bill Perkins Denounces the “Salt in the Wound” Retaliatory Arrest of Individual Who Exposed Racist Act - NYPD Car with Infant Black Doll Head on Antennae

(Harlem, NY) – State Senator Bill Perkins (D-Harlem) joined family, community, elected officials and Attorney Roger Wareham today calling the arrest last week of “whistleblowers” Clarence Jones and his mother, retaliatory.

Jones, a 27 year-old student,  bravely exposed New York City Police Department officers who  were driving their unmarked police car in Harlem Tuesday, July 22, with the head of an infant black baby doll attached to the antennae.

Jones joined scores of Harlem community members and leaders Thursday, July 24 to protest the racist act and call for an investigation of the officers’ behavior.  Just 2 days  later he was  arrested and charged with Obstruction of Governmental Administration and resisting arrest. Jones’ mother was arrested shortly after for inquiring as to the nature of her son’s arrest. Clarence Jones is due in Court October 7.

“This is retaliation for speaking out, nothing more, nothing less. Mr. Jones didn’t succumb to the fear this act was sure to solicit. Instead he reached out to his community and elected officials and bravely stepped in line to put a stop to this hatred and racism at the hands of police. When it continued Mrs. Jones again stepped up to speak out and was arrested” said Senator Perkins.

Perkins was joined by Senator Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn), ranking Democrat on the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Correction committee and former NYPD Captain,  President of 100 Blacks in Law enforcement Who Care, Mark Claxton and Jones’ family calling on the dismissal of all charges.

Together the group met to publicly denounce the “insult to injury” arrest of Jones and Jones’ mother.  In addition to a public apology and investigation into last week’s actions, Perkins is calling for NYPD officials to take zero tolerance actions to cease the continued harassment and any attempts to intimidate and suppress the community.

Multiple reports confirmed that on the evening of Tuesday, July 22 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., an unmarked NYPD car drove through Harlem in the vicinity of 116th Street and Fifth Avenue with the dolls head atop the car’s antennae. At the time Senator Perkins was attending a ribbon cutting in the neighborhood when he was approached by several outraged witnesses to the act.

Last week Perkins joined community members and gathered at the foot of Marcus Garvey Park at 120th Street and Fifth Avenue at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 24th.  Marchers proceeded to 116th Street & Fifth Avenue where the incident was first reported.

After the grand opening, Artastic Destination will start a schedule of rotating exhibits on the south wall beginning with “Living Spaces, Imaginary Places” by Leonora Wolfeld from October 1st to October 26th with a reception on October 4th, 7-10 pm.  Leonora Wolfeld has degrees from both Hunter and Queens colleges and has been involved in more than twenty-four solo and group shows since 1996, winning numerous awards.  She will be exhibiting monotypes, linotypes and etchings as well as combinations of these printmaking techniques.  Following will be an exhibit of paintings by Susan Bird, starting on October 29th and running through November 23rd with a reception on November 1st, 7-10 pm.  Susan Bird is Huntington based artist who works with acrylic on canvas and has studied at the Nassau County Museum of Art.  She is inspired by landscapes and seascapes with strong color, light and movement.

About Claudia Markovich
Raised in New York City by immigrant parents, Claudia Markovich was interested in the arts and becoming an artist from an early age. Claudia was painting and writing poetry while attending Hunter College High School and planned to study art in college, however her father, a Yugoslav immigrant who escaped Communism via political asylum in France, convinced her to get a practical degree.  Claudia earned an Bachelors degree in engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and after college supported herself with various technical jobs while studying art at the Massachusetts College of Art and Art Students League.  Many of her paintings from the time depict journeys and overcoming barriers, using perspective to illustrate her struggle to establish an artistic identity.   It was only once she learned to use all her diverse skills in concert that she truly began to live an artist’s life.  In 2001 she created Claudiam Publications, Inc. and reproduced her art on cards and prints, as well as showcasing it on the Internet, bringing her artwork to the public on her own terms. Now with Artastic Destination she takes her project to the next step, creating a convenient venue where she can share her art and the art of other local artists with the vibrant Huntington community .  More information is available on the artists web site:
