Allan Houston, famed professional athlete, philanthropic community leader and successful entrepreneur, will address an estimated 1,000 graduates and their families at Dowling College’s 46th Commencement ceremony on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.

“We are honored to welcome Allan Houston back to Dowling College.  We were thrilled when he visited Dowling this year for our Homecoming event and forged such a positive relationship with our students and faculty. Allan Houston’s professional athletic accomplishments as well as his community dedication will truly uplift and inspire our graduates and their families,” said Robert J. Gaffney, President of Dowling College. Mr. Houston will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane
Letters.

Dowling College applauds all of Allan Houston’s major achievements in the NBA. Before his retirement in the Fall of 2005, he was touted as one of the “purest shooters” in the NBA, finishing his career as one of the NBA’s all-time greatest long-range shooters and one of the all-time leading scorers in Knicks history.  Mr. Houston was a two-time NBA All-Star, and in his last healthy season, he finished as the 10th leading scorer in the league.  Mr. Houston was named one of The Sporting News’ “Good Guys in Sports” when he helped Team USA bring home the gold medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics games.

Dowling College commends Allan Houston, a man of faith and strong family values, for living his life with a determination to utilize his success as a professional athlete to help others while continuing to grow a variety of entrepreneurial interests.  Mr. Houston’s dedication to helping others is demonstrated through the work of his Foundation, which is currently working with a variety of community and corporate partners to empower and serve the needs of young people.  The Foundation’s original programming includes a “Father Knows Best” Basketball Retreat, a weekend event that combines high-powered basketball with meaningful life-skills for fathers/mentors and their sons/mentees.  An innovative new program in business education and
development was launched in Harlem last year and is now expanding to New Orleans. These meaningful programs are empowering young people socially, professionally and spiritually.

Allan Houston conveys strong familial, community and educational values that he continues to instill in others. Mr. Houston is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, a graduate of University of Tennessee and is happily married to Tamara Johnson Houston with four wonderful children.
