Ron Paul Finishes Second in Maine Caucus
February 5, 2008

(Long Island, N.Y.) Three days before Super Tuesday, Texas Representative Ron Paul gained steam in his bid for the Oval Office by placing second to Mitt Romney in the Republican GOP nominations for the state of Maine and ahead of Senator John McCain in garnering over 35% of the votes. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney logged 52% of the total votes to win the state.
“In the last weeks, I was sure it was Ron Paul,” said Julie Ann O’Brien, executive director of the Maine Republican Party. “But in the last three to five days, both of the Republican candidates Romney and McCain really kicked into gear and got people up here.”
10-term Texas Congressman Ron Paul was the only candidate who personally campaigned in the state of Maine and drew tremendous support from local groups as well as the business sector from the area. In the last quarter of the year 2007, Ron Paul amassed over $20 Million of funding for his campaign and was the highest and most successful Republican fundraiser.
This placing by Dr. Ron Paul in Maine’s caucus represents a growing national support for his candidacy and installed new optimism for his supporters and staff coming into the biggest Tuesday of his campaign. Dubbed as the “Tuesday of Destiny” on Feb. 5th, 2008, the Republican GOP nominations will simultaneously hold Primaries and Caucuses in 21 different states including Utah, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia, New Jersey, California, Alabama, West Virginia, North Dakota, Montana, Missouri, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Illinois, Delaware, Connecticut, Colorado, Arkansas, Arizona and Alaska. The total size of delegations for Super Tuesday will be 1,081 for all 21 states, a number that will give tremendous advantage to whoever seizes the day.
“Ron Paul’s strong second place finish in Maine, in which he beat John McCain, is proof that this race is far from over,” said Ron Paul campaign manager Lew Moore. “We’ll continue to battle for every delegate in this wide-open race for the Republican nomination.”
Meanwhile, Mitt Romney’s win in Maine solidified his spot as a serious contender for the Republican GOP nomination as he closes the gap with Arizona Senator John McCain who was the early favorite after winning on key primaries in Florida and South Carolina in January.
(Story Correction: This article that ran on the early morning of February 5th, 2008 stated that Ron Paul came in Second Place in the Maine Republican Caucus. At this time, 95.52% of the towns in Maine are reporting and it appears that Ron Paul actually came in Third with 18% of the vote behind McCain who finished a bit higher with 21% of the vote.)

That’s great news for Dr. Ron Paul!!! Romney probably chartered a few buses into Maine. We must elect the only honest candidate that is not supported by the Council on Foreign Relations as are Hillary, Obama, McCain, Huckabee, and Romney. The Council on Foreign Relations wants us to give up U.S. Sovereignty to world organizations like the united nations.

Finally, someone reports on this. I doubt any mainstream media will mention this.

No doubt Mitt has to write huge checks and fly in the Romney clans in the pivotal states. The question is if McCain keeps winning, how long will Mitt keep self-financing his campaign? Meanwhile, Paul’s got the time and money to finnish the race.

Why do people keep calling Ron Paul a “long shot” and an “upstart”? He’s been a politician for decades and he’s doing well at the polls. It’s disgusting how complicit the mainstream media are in maintaining the status quo.

Thanks so much for reporting accurately on this and for posting it for the world to see. It gives me faith that at least some in the media want to report fairly and correctly, without bias. THANK YOU.

I agree with sara. The media has labeled him a “long shot” since the beginning, before any votes were even cast and before people even knew who was running. They also labeled rudy as the frontrunner and look at where he is now…gone. Stop putting labels and start talking about issues!

Thank you for reporting this without bias. Dr. Paul has been the victim of an obscene Media Blackout since day 1– when they do give him coverage, he is the “long-shot” candidate, or the GOP “Maverick” — or any number of fringe words… that to the average voter makes it seem like he can not win.
He is the ONLY candidate that really wants to return this country to the Free Nation we once were. Reduce the Police State, reduce Government interference, restore our economy and falling currency, and protect individual liberties…no wonder the mainstream media/corporations don’t want this guy to win.
If you look on cnn.com’s election center– they have pictures of every candidate remaining, EXCEPT FOR RON PAUL! They just have his name in tiny lettering under McCain and Romney— how is this legal? I encourage everyone who has any stock/shares in CNN or FAUX News to dump them immediately– maybe when those companies lose billions in market cap they will see that the American People will not tolerate their bias.

If Huckabee runs out of money.. maybe he should team up with Ron Paul as Vice… Sorry Huckabee fans.. it was just a suggestion. Good luck to them both.
RP and H have similiar views. I’ve also notice that Main Stream Media should talk about Ron Paul.. b/c they get the most views and responses which equates to advertising dollars. Once they realize this, they can’t stop the Ron Paul revolution.

Due to the process in Maine, Dr. Paul actually got 1st place!
He is getting 40% of the delegates there and the remainder will be split between Romney and McCain! This is AMAZING considering the fact that he isn’t given the time of day by most media sources and has been left out or ignored in the debates. The only debate that he was given equal time in was the one on MSNBC.

Interesting, this is the first report I have seen showing RP second. All the other MSM reports that he came in third behind MCcain at 19% to MCcains 20%. WHy did it take till Tuesday to get the truth out?

They screwed him out of second place….you media people should be rounded up and imprisoned!

The mainstream yellow rags are all owned by the same four or five corporations. Only independent and online periodicals dare to give Ron Paul coverage. The big media corporations are obsolete and they don’t even know it yet!
Check out the NY Times retraction of their blatant smear of Paul as a racist: http://themedium.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/12/26/editors-note-the-ron-paul-vid-lash/
The smear piece is still up and still no apologies from the Times or the writer. Shame on them!

I am so happy to hear this news! Thank you for reporting this! Even fox news blows off Ron Paul. He is the best candidate for President. Finally, an honest man who wants to follow the constitution! He is humble, smart and the common people’s president who speaks like a man and not a actor telling everyone what they want to hear. He is truly corageous. He has my vote!

i wonder what took so long to count all those votes. cheating ain’t easy…

Why Sara? Because we deal in reality. I’m a supporter of Ron Paul, his message, and his fans. But Ron Paul’s message is anti-establishment. He’s not popular with the core of the current two parties. That is why he is a long shot. Your statements are irrelevant. Reality and clear thinking are needed. If you’re asking questions like that, you’re not using logic.

Congratulations in what seems to be an accurate and unbiased article on Ron Paul.
We are simply fascinated overseas by the obvious bias of the media in the US and their obvious campaign against what appears to us to be the most open and honest politician of this election.
This may indeed by your last chance to save the republic.

As I sit here, I understand that there are hydrogen fuel cells that produce hydrogen on demand, and can double milage on cars. These run off the battery current, and do not violate the existing warranty. These exist in mass today. There is also a type of catalytic converter that can increase milage by 4 times. If everyeone in America (or alteast Ron Paul supporters) invested in this, and tightened up their wallets (IE: stop the credit train / avoid interest / become as energy self sufficient as possible) then you can simultaneously sustain your lifestyle while removing those who count on your ignorance and inaction to continue existing. You would have to stuff a few less whoppers down your gullet, or suck down a few less 2 dollar cups of coffee, but wouldn’t you like to be self sufficient? Is it worth time and money to do so? Then search, and you shall find. Faith without works is dead.

Well, I can certainly say I do agree that this article is not exactly completely trustworthy, however it is a vast improvement from what we see of Ron Paul in the mainstream media. Ron Paul and the ideas he stands for are what we need to continue to support even if, heaven forbid, Ron Paul doesn’t get the nomination and win the election. Continue to support the Revolution of Love, Liberty and this idea that the Constitution was put in place to prevent the atrocities that are now taking place from happening. We can save the Republic! Restore the Constitution!
I do agree we have a chance to kick them where it hurts if we all make an effort to become energy independent. There are amazing solar powered generators that can cut your energy bill down to practically nothing. Google KenSolar.com to find out more. We have the ability to harness the power of hydrogen now, if possible could Mike Z. post where we could go to buy these products?

I appreciate the correction note at the bottom of the article.
However, it is important for your readers to know that at no point during the tally did either John McCain or Ron Paul break 22%. While McCain and Paul battled for 2nd place throughout the tally, neither of them ever came within 25% of Romney.
I don’t where the 35% for Paul figure came from, but I assure you, it did not come from any official source at any time during the process which began on 2/1/08.
With best,
