computer-crime.jpg(Long Island, N.Y.) Carolyn Gudmundson had it made as a Microsoft manager but it seems she spent a lot of her time with the company stealing money. In fact, in the end she stole more than $1 million from Microsoft Corp, Expedia Inc, and another California company.  The official charges include 11 counts of wire fraud and seven counts of mail fraud.  Gudmundson was indicted by a federal grand jury on Thursday and was released on her own recognizance on Friday.

Apparently Carolyn Gudmundson, 44 of Kirkland, Washington,  had access to a company credit card with Microsoft for the use of making domain name purchases and starting in the year 2000, she would submit doctored or fraudulent receipts with incorrect domain prices for reimbursement.  There were even some cases where the manager would submit expense reports where she didn’t even have receipts - but she was reimbursed in good faith.

In addition to the frauds that she perpetrated against Microsoft the woman also went a step further and made deals for domains which were already settled through previous agreements between Microsoft and Expedia.  Apparently Microsoft had paid for domain names registered to Expedia and Gudmundson was submitting invoices to the travel site and was being reimbursed for the expenses that she had incurred through buying the domains, although the domains had already been transfered, and paid for in the past.  Gudmundson also apparently told a manager at an acquisition company, Marksman Inc, that someone by the name of G.M. Lossman was owed money from a transfer of a few domain names to Microsoft.  The funds were sent to Gudmundson’s mother’s home and the checks were cashed.

Carolyn Gudmundson’s arraignment is scheduled for December 13th and reports are that she will plead not guilty.  The former Microsoft manager is facing up to 20 years in prison for her crimes and fines of up to $250,000.
