Ron Paul Ain’t Gonna Win? Say You Don’t Know, Joe!

Ron Paul Ain’t Gonna Win? Say You Don’t Know, Joe!

ron-paul-presidential.jpgWhen I first read Joe Wallace’s column on LongIslandExchange.com, “Who The Heck Is Ron Paul?” (Oct 25, 2007), I was angry and I wanted badly to write a response article to zing him and what I perceived to be his arrogance.  Never before in my lifetime would I have cared enough to defend a presidential candidate, but this time was different.  Fortunately, I was pressed for time, and my indignance subsided into rationality.  What I mean is that I’ve written less of a zing and more of a invitation.

Although Joe Wallace made his case clear about why the ignorant American public would not elect Ron Paul, I found Joe’s article to be fatally flawed in two ways.  Perhaps you guys spotted more flaws than I did, but here’s what I found.  First, he spent substantial verbiage on the right-to-life issue and injected a very condescending opinion on it.  He called it a non-issue, although he clearly is a pro-choice kind of guy.  Heralding the pro-choice stance, he called any reversal of the status quo “going backwards”.  The more one reads of his two pro-choice paragraphs, the more one sees that it’s not a non-issue for Joe.  In any event, his focus on the issue was misplaced and his opinion that it is a non-issue, erroneous.  It is misplaced because the article was supposed to introduce Ron Paul to his readers, not take jabs at right-to-lifers, and it was erroneous to state that it is a non-issue because Ron Paul is someone who seeks to bring power back to the States from the Federal government and, like every President before him, would have the power to nominate and appoint federal judges who, in turn, can play a part in bringing the question of choice or life back to the States.  In concluding the topic of Joe’s first fatal flaw, let me just implore voters to not reject any candidate based on one issue.

The second fatal flaw in Joe Wallace’s supersedes even the first.  Joe Wallace’s article purported to be about Ron Paul, but revealed itself to be an article of opinion about why Joe thinks Ron Paul will not win the Presidency.  Not only is the title, “Who The Heck Is Ron Paul” misleading, but the article, whether intended or not, casts Ron Paul’s campaign in a negative light.  With the title as it was worded, Joe Wallace should have presented Ron Paul to the reader and left the reader’s choice in limbo.  Instead, an uninformed reader was left with the impression that a vote cast for Ron Paul (“the spoiler” as he put it) is a wasted vote.  I harken back to that ABC News interview from July, 2007, with George Stephanopoulos:

Important Agenda Item at the (ICANN) Public Meeting

INTA supports events aimed at protecting brand owners and consumers as they navigate the Internet and use the Whois database

inta.jpgNEW YORK, NY – October 29, 2007 – The International Trademark Association (INTA) today announced it’s strong support for the Whois database, which is an important agenda item at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ (ICANN) 30th International Public Meeting in California beginning on October 29th, 2007.

INTA, along with the Intellectual Property Constituency (IPC) and The Commercial and Business Users Constituency are working together to promote the 30th International Public Meeting being held in Los Angeles, California, from October 29th to November 2nd, 2007. The week-long series of events includes topical information sessions and panel discussions, and culminates with a vote on the future of the Whois database.

“The Whois database is exactly the type of consumer and brand owner protection tool that we need in our arsenal against cyber crime,” said INTA Executive Director, Alan Drewsen. “For too long now, fraudulent tactics on the Internet have targeted everyday online users and legitimate brand names and owners; Whois helps shift that balance away from criminals by empowering Internet businesses and users,” affirmed Drewsen.

New York Islanders Ahead in Early Going

October 27, 2007

Ahead of Devils, Rangers in Early Going

ny_islanders.gifThe New York Rangers grabbed all the headlines in the offseason. Signing big ticket free agents such as Chris Drury and Scott Gomez will do that in this town, and the Blueshirts were the sexy pick in the Eastern Conference. The New Jersey Devils lost Gomez, but made a splash with their new arena in Newark. The Islanders? Critics had a field day with all of their free agent defections and predicted disaster for them. But after the first eight games of the regular season, it was the team from Long Island that was tied for second place in the Atlantic Division and the other two metropolitan area teams holding up the bottom.

To start off the campaign, the Islanders swept a home-at-home two-game set from the Buffalo Sabres, and have beaten the Rangers (2-1 on October 10) and Devils (4-3 in overtime on October 20) at the Nassau Coliseum. Overall, the Isles have five wins versus three losses, with their only bad game coming in a 8-1 loss in Toronto a day after the Ranger win. Their other two losses have been by a combined three goals, so they have been in every game besides the one blowout loss to the Maple Leafs.

In Saturday’s win against New Jersey, the Islanders pulled off a stunner on Firefighter Appreciation Night by scoring the game-winner on a power play with only 3.7 seconds left in the extra session. Chris Campoli took a shot from the point and new captain Bill Guerin found the loose puck and was able to jam it passed Devils’ goaltender Kevin Weekes, erupting the fans into a frenzy.

Long Island Is Entering A Period of Social And Economic Crisis

Study Shows That Long Island Is Entering A Period of Social And
Economic Crisis As Baby Boomers Retire

gaffney.jpgOAKDALE, NY - Dowling College President Robert J. Gaffney termed a study prepared by the Long Island Economic and Social Policy Institute (LIESP) at Dowling College about aging on Long Island as “alarming.” The study will be formally released Friday morning, October 26 at LIESP’s monthly Roundtable about Long Island’s future, being held at Newsday in Melville.

The report titled, “Aging on Long Island: A Crisis In Its Infancy” was prepared by LIESP Director Martin Cantor and showed that the only demographic group on Long Island that will grow during the next 20 years will be aging baby boomers.  Mr. Cantor said “as baby boomers leave their youth behind, there will be fewer Long Islanders around to replace them in the regional workforce.”

The study revealed that between the years 2005 and 2025, those in the region over age 65 will increase their representation in the regional population from 13 percent in 2005 to 19 percent by 2025, a percentage increase of 46.2 percent.  In vivid contrast, those of ages up to 20 years decrease from 27 to 24 percent of the population, or an 11.1 percent drop, while those between 20 to 65 years of age reflect a 5 percent decrease from 60 to 57 percent.

An Overwhelming Response To Ron Paul Article

October 27, 2007

An Overwhelming Response To Republican Presidential Candidate Ron Paul

I have never gotten the kind of overwhelming response on anything I’ve ever written here at LI Exchange the way I did regarding my post on Republican Presidential long shot candidate Ron Paul. My inbox has been clogged with responses, too many to reply to. Warning: Rambling screed ahead. May contain inherent contradictions, unclear writing, and a bit of froth around the mouth area.

For starters, let me admit to a major error in fact by calling Paul a Libertarian candidate. My research was faulty, guilty as charged. No excuses there, and many thanks to everyone who wrote in to correct me. Of course, the title of the article was “Who The Heck Is Ron Paul” which is a subtle hint as to my complete ignorance of anybody but the frontrunners in this 2008 thing.

Paul’s status as a Republican candidate changes nothing in my estimation of him being the Howard Dean of this election. He’s still not going to make it as President this time around. If Ron Paul were running as a Democrat, I might have a revised opinion of his chances. Americans will be voting for regime change this time, folks. If you can’t see that at present, don’t worry. You will.
