First Online Funeral Director Program in the Nation Announces Graduates; Including Moloney’s Own Karen Dowdell

karen_sm.jpgLake Ronkonkoma, NY (September 26th, 2007) It Was announced today that Karen Dowdell of Fort Salonga, NY was one of the the first of six students to graduate with an Associate Degree in Funeral Service from the new online program of American Academy McAllister Institute in New York City. While it is true that other schools offer similar online courses, this is the first program to offer all courses (except the restorative arts and embalming labs) online. Ms. Dowdell, who has been employed as a greeter at Moloney Family Funeral Homes in Lake Ronkonkoma, NY since October 2004, is also the mother of three children.  Enrolling in the online program allowed Ms. Dowdell to pursue her degree in funeral service while continuing to work and take care of her family. Ms. Dowdell joined her fellow online students from various towns across the United States in New York City on August 5 to begin their two-week Capstone, the final phase of the online funeral service degree program. The two-week experience provided the students with the opportunity to complete their hands-on experiences in Restorative Art and Embalming. The Restorative Art lab was completed on campus, while the embalming was done at Bellevue Hospital. Students also participated in AAMI’s Comprehensive Review for the National Board Exam, alongside the on-campus students. On Thursday August 9, the six online students joined 22 campus students in the Graduation Ceremony held at Fordham University at Lincoln Center. In addition to her diploma, Ms. Dowdell received AAMI’s Academic Achievement award for resiliency and determination in completing academic goals. She has subsequently passed the National Board Exam.

The Moloney Family Funeral Homes are located in Lake Ronkonkoma, Hauppauge, Bohemia, Holbrook and Central Islip, NY and are owned by F. Daniel, Michael and Peter Moloney.
